ReplyI also helped organize and plan the event. It was such an amazing feeling yesterday when it all came together and we saw all of our runners and walkers at Simmons. Horsham is a special community, as seen by those that came out yesterday and the local businesses that wanted to help support the township trough this 5k. We are already being asked about next year's run! That's a GREAT sign!

ReplyOne of the board members said at the board meeting that information can be interpreted in many different ways and that the new menu items in the elementary schools are "revamped and nutritional" .... Please... Share how onion rings and bosco sticks are nutritional and that elementary school children should be back to eating that over baked and unprocessed foods?

ReplyThank you Dr. Dever for your insights and for extending your knowledge to the Patch readers. We have had so much resistance in our district that it seems the simple truth, that we are supporting the HEALTH of ALL kids in the district, has been lost on deaf ears.

On the Blog Post NIS Blog: Enforcing Policies that Protect Children

ReplySo much time has been spent trying to help make the UD schools serve better ad more nutritious foods for our kids. Some of us moms have jobs that we are taking time off for and volunteering many unpaid hours for... Now, only to find that the policy we were understood to be helping to shape was just a piece of paper and not enforceable. This is so disappointing! Why waste our time and the taxpayers time if the policy was never meant to be followed in the first place? And since its been proven as such, what other policies are treated this way?

ReplyWhen I first became a member of the NAC, I felt I could make a difference and give input on making healthy options available for our students in the district. Though I have become more aware of nutrition, (not to mention all of the district policies and procedures) I have also become greatly disappointed with the way the committee has been run and the perception that we moms are a nuisance and are trying to cause problems. As a single working mom, the little free time I have should not be spent wasting my time, chasing my tail only to later find out that in the end, after so much time has been spent between meetings, research, etc... policies are not even being followed. Many of the parent volunteers on the NAC have been given the run around so often that it only makes us want to do less for the district and also question the motives in the first place. It's very disappointing that the parents that were so willing to be a part of change have been treated as the enemy when all that we wanted to do was stand up for the kids and families that cannot speak up for themselves. It taught me to think twice before getting involved in a district organization/volunteer position as I don't feel my time has been considered or respected.
