Lookout, Getaway Driver Will Serve 10 to 20 After Burglarizing Montco Homes

After being apprehended in 2010 in Abington, a Philadelphia man will face a prison sentence.

He claims he was only the lookout and getaway driver, but a Montgomery County judge decided he deserved a serious punishment for his actions. William Perkins, 64, of Philadelphia, has served much of his life in prison, and according to court dockets has a rap sheet several pages long. He was sentenced Wednesday to 10 to 20 years behind bars for his role in a string of burglaries that occurred in 2010. As Patch reported at the time, Perkins, who also used the aliases of John Potter and William Potter, was taken into custody on Oct. 12, 2010 along with  John Daniel Wilson, 48, of Philadelphia. Man Killed at North Hills Train Station

There are few details, but a SEPTA representative confirmed that a man died at the station Thursday night.

A man apparently died at the North Hills train station Thursday night. Abington and SEPTA police, and EMS staff were on the scene at the train station in the North Hills section of Abington. A SEPTA representative said the man—who has not yet been identified—was struck by a train at about 6:15 p.m. “A man was killed by a Lansdale-Doylestown regional rail train coming from Center City and heading toward Doylestown,” Andrew Busch, a spokesman for SEPTA said. A white sheet covered the man, who was laying several feet from the northbound tracks; there were several puddles of blood on the platform. The body was loaded into a Montgomery County Coroner’s van at about 8:15 p.m. The coroner and a SEPTA Police Lieutenant both declined to comment. …

Appointments Necessary for Upper Dublin Kindergarten Registration

Appointments to begin in early April for 2013-14 new students.

Those Cardinals heading for the big yellow school bus for the first time need an appointment. Kindergarten registration is just around the corner for Upper Dublin School District. According to the district's website, appointments will be held on April 10, 16, 18, 23 and 30. Parents should contact their child's school to make an appointment. If you are unsure which child your child should attend, a boundary map is included with the article (see .pdf file at top right). Parents may also call the Registration Office directly at 215-643-8971 for information. The office is open from Tuesday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. (closed noon to 1 p.m. for lunch). Upper Dublin Library Unveils New Look

A revamped look for the library.

  On Saturday, the Upper Dublin Public Library held an open house to celebrate the end of construction inside the buildling. According to a Times Herald story, the library started a fundraising initiative called UDPL-ReNEWed! to cover the costs of modernizing the library. See the story here. Things renovated? The circulation and information desks, a conference room, a teen/young adult reading area and a new quiet reading lounge.  While the construction is finished, the library still has more work to be done. According to the story, the goal is to raise $100,000, of which the library has raised 90 percent. The total cost will come in at about $250,000.

UD Music Parents Advocate to Save Music, Arts

Reductions in the music and arts programs are proposed for the 2013-14 school year.

On Monday, the Upper Dublin High School Marching Band Parent's Association held an open meeting to discuss the proposed cuts in the 2013-14 school year budget. Deb Carver, the Public Relations Secretary for the March Band Parents Association, say that the parents who gathered on Monday were there to "advocate for something that is near and dear to our hearts." Chris Dowdell, President of the Parent's Association, said, "The budget process is already underway, time is not on our side." He continued, "The stakes of tonight's meeting are high." The proposed budget, according to Superintendent of Schools Michael Pladus, as a $2.7 million dollar deficit and the school board can raise taxes to a maximum of 3.04 percent.
