A second Montgomery County student in two days has died after being struck by a vehicle after dark. Upper Moreland Police said a 17-year-old student at Upper Moreland High School was pronounced dead Tuesday evening at Abington Hospital after being struck at about 5:35 p.m. in the painted median of Blair Mill Road at Moreland Avenue. The driver of the striking vehicle, described as a sport utility vehicle, is a 39-year-old Bucks County woman who remained at the scene and is said to be cooperating with authorities. The student's name has not been released by authorities. Kathleen Arnold-Yerger informed supervisors about the popularity of e-books at Montgomery County-Norristown Public Library and her hopes for the future of the Bookmobile in the township
Montgomery County-Norristown Public Library has $9,000 more to its coffers, thanks to a contribution Monday night from Montgomery Township. Executive director Kathleen Arnold-Yerger was there to accept the check and she filled in supervisors and the public in attendance on e-books and her dream for the future of the Bookmobile. Arnold-Yerger said the library now has more than 11,000 titles for e-readers like Kindles and Nooks. "I think since last year we tripled the circulation with e-books. We can't keep up with the requests for e-books," she said. "You don't have to purchase them; you borrow your e-books from the library. You can choose to have it for seven, 14 or 21 days. The county is tops for social and economic factors, but fails under healthiness of the physical environment
Montgomery County is the overall fifth in health outcomes Pennsylvania out of 67 - two ahead of Bucks County and three behind Chester County - according to the 2012 County Health Rankings. It is also second in the state for health factors. According to a press release from Burness Communications, the rankings are "an annual check-up that highlights the healthiest and least healthy counties in every state, as well as those factors that influence health, outside of the doctor’s office." The County Health Rankings look at education rates, income levels, access to healthy foods, mortality rates, access to medical care and more. The new department chief returns to the county detective's office after five years in private practice.
With the retirement of current Chief Detective Oscar Vance coming in the next week, Montgomery County District Attorney Risa Ferman has picked a familiar name in Ed Justice as his replacement. "His work ethic is incomparable," said Ferman. "He understands the need to do whatever needs to be done to complete a job. He demonstrated-both as a detective and as a leader--the highest level of skill and the most dedicated work ethic." Between 1986 and 2006, Justice served 14 years with the Montgomery County Detective Bureau as a homicide detective, and another six years as deputy chief.
