Nutrisystem is Losing, But Not Just Weight

The Fort Washington-based weight-loss program faces more lost revenue.

The company promises its clients they'll lose. It just wasn't supposed to be a loss to the wallet. Nutrisystem, a popular weight-loss program based in Fort Washington, has reported larger than expected losses in the fourth quarter of 2012. The company sites declined sales and unexpected "charges" as the main reasons for decreased values. And, according to many watching its market value, the tide isn't going to turn anytime soon. According to CNBC, the company fears even more loss in 2013. "The company said 2012 marked the fifth straight year its sales have declined," said the CNBC report. $63 Million Awarded in Motrin Lawsuit

Fort Washington-based McNeil-PPC Inc. and Johnson & Johnson will have to pay.

In a lawsuit that started back in 2007, a Massachusetts family will be awarded $63 million from Johnson and Johnson, and its Fort Washington-based McNeil-PPC Inc., said the Associated Press. The suit stated that the corporations should be held responsible for its prodcut, Motrin. Samantha Reckis, then age 7, suffered a life-threatening drug reaction and lost most of her skin when she took a children's pain reliever nearly a decade ago, said the AP report. Courts determined that Samantha and her parents will actually be paid a total of $109 million, including interest, for the suffering they experienced when Samantha was diagnosed with a rare side effect known as toxic epidermal necrolysis, lost 90 percent of her skin and was blinded. CrossFit Opens Location in Fort Washington

CrossFit, a functional approach to fitness, has opened in Fort Washington.

  After a year and a half of success at the Conshohocken location, Jay Ross has opened a CrossFit Fort Washington at 425 Delaware Ave. CrossFit, as Ross described, is an approach to fitness that is more functional training, with weight lifting, kettle ball training and more, with movements that model daily living movements in some form. CrossFit focuses on group classes and members register for a specific one-hour class. Members work closely with a trainer and he said the members build a camaraderie with the other members.  Ross continued that the trainers make sure that the members are safe and effective in the CrossFit program. A Luge World Champ, Right in Fort Washington

Local man places 21st in the world in international luge championship.

The same luge track that took the life of a Georgian Olympiad in the 2010 Vancouver games played home to the world luge championship this past weekend. While a German took top billing, some local Americans represented their country by taking 21st place in the world. According to Yahoo! Sports, Andrew Sherk, of Fort Washington, Pa., missed the top 18 cut. Racing along with Jake Hyrns, of Muskegon, Mich., the duo officially placed 21st based on their first heat time. In a Baltimore Sun-produced YouTube video shot Jan. 20, 2010 at Lake Placid, N.Y. Tony Benshoof, another American luger, talked about the track at Whistler. He called the Vancouver track "very challenging." "It's fast from the top down," he said. "You've got your hands full." …

The Chabad Lubavitch Centers Aim to Unite Area's Jewish Families

Organization serves families with a new Fort Washington location.

The Chabad Lubavitch Centers of Montgomery County aims to unite Jewish families in the area by creating a sense of community. According to a recent story in Montgomery Media's Parents Express, the center has seen a strong success in its new Rydal location, which opened in September. Housed next door to the Abington Art Center, the Rydal location is just one of three centers operated by the organization. The vitality of the site spurred the creation of a new spot in Fort Washington. The centers offer "Mommy & Me programs, a Kosher Culinary Club, Hebrew School, holiday and Shabbat services," according to the article.  “Our focus is on fostering positive Jewish experiences, introducing kids to holidays and traditions and serving people’s …

Still Time to Get the Flu Shot for Those in Maple Glen, Fort Washington

While area pharmacies run short, the North Penn VNA serves communities in Upper Dublin Township.

As the nation's pharmacies start to run short on the proper flu vaccine, those in the areas of Maple Glen and Fort Washington have hope. According to an article in the Lansdale Reporter, the North Penn Visiting Nurses Association (VNA) has a bountiful supply of the vaccine and is offering them to the public. Maple Glen and Fort Washington zip codes are serviced by the North Penn VNA. "According to VNA spokesperson Theresa Humphreys, as of Wednesday morning the VNA still had 'several hundred flu shots available for the community,'" said the article.
