Montgomery County Asset Building Coalition hosted its 2013 Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program.
"You can write that off, did you know that?" It was a phrase used quite often by those that volunteered their time to prepare taxes for Montgomery County residents that could not afford assistance. The Montgomery County Asset Building Coalition hosted the 2013 Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, which in total saved residents more than $5 million, according to a report in the Times Herald. “Our total federal refunds totalled $3.4 million; our state refunds were $950,000, so the total refunds to taxpayers were $4,360,000. That’s a lot of money,” Harriet Winokur, MCABC’s coordinator, told the Herald. “It gets better. Our services saved taxpayers approximately $675,000 in fees, which is not additional money into their pockets, …

Participation for the annual cleanup has risen over the years, showing community appreciation for their local state park.
Fort Washington State Park will hold its annual park clean up April 13, from 9 a.m. 3 p.m. The annual cleanup has been held for more than 20 years, in honor of Earth Day, and has been growing in participation for the last 15. “We had 250 people last year,” said Eric Ihlein, Fort Washington State Park park manager. “It’s great. Our numbers are increasing, we get all ages coming out.” While Ihlein said that the park’s maintenance staff continues the park’s upkeep, he adds that the park receives at least 600,000 visitors each year, and sees that the annual park clean up as a way to further connect with park visitors. “A lot are repeat visitors,” Ihlein said. “Some come to eat lunch, have a picnic or walk their dog.” Ihlein said those …

After 12 years of helping families struggling with cancer, 'For Pete's Sake' has received its largest donation ever.
"Though I'll never say that being diagnosed with cancer was a blessing, there have been moments, people, places, and experiences that have made me feel blessed since my diagnosis." Reading through the hundreds of entries on the nonprofit For Pete's Sake webpage, those words, written by 34-year-old Gina Etzrodt, stand out amongst submissions from cancer patients, survivors, and those who lost their battle to the disease. Many of their stories follow similar paths – A stage-3 colon cancer diagnosis at 33. A 40-year-old mother of two diagnosed with breast cancer. Mounting medical bills. Lives turned upside. Children wondering if Dad is well enough to have a game of catch. They all have something in common as well. Trips to Florida and …

Upper Dublin resident fondly recalls experience, promotes the same for others.
AFS Intercultural Programs, the oldest high school exchange organization in the country, started just after World War I by volunteer ambulance drivers looking to improve international relations, is seeking host families for students that are continuing to arrive throughout the month of August, and in need of permanent hosts. The organization is also looking for additional volunteers. “There are about 2,500 high school students from over 50 countries hosted in the US through AFS every year. Many are in suburban and even rural areas, where their presence really has an impact on the community,” said Julie Berger, who grew up in Upper Dublin and who knows first-hand about the life-changing experience. “I participated in the British Exchange…
