Abington Deputy Chief Gives Nod to Upper Dublin PD

Abington Deputy Police Chief John Livingood thanked the Upper Dublin Police Department for its role in a taskforce, which helped nab an alleged burglar.

The Abington Board of Commissioners on Thursday night honored Detective Sgt. Steve Fink and Deputy Chief John Livingood with Class III Commendations for their respective roles in arresting a northeast Philadelphia man allegedly involved in 30 burglaries. Abington was part of a multi-agency taskforce that helped arrest Derrick Carter, of the 4600 block of Sheffield Avenue. Livingood thanked the Upper Dublin Police Department as well as the Pennsylvania State Police.  See the initial story from November here. According to Livingood, Carter burglarized residential properties in the daytime, prying in the front or rear door usually. He took jewelry and electronics, including TVs and likely acted with at least one accomplice.

A Dangerous Golf Ball and a Bad Best Buy Purchase

  Property damage … On Wednesday, April 17 at about 5 p.m., a golf ball struck the windshield of a gold Chevrolet Venture minivan traveling north on Limekiln Pike near the Lulu Country Club, police said. According to police, the victim, a Glenside resident, said she did not see the golfer who hit the ball that struck her vehicle. Police spoke with the Lulu Country Club manager; the manager was not able to find anyone who may have seen the incident, police said.  Identity theft … On April 9, someone made an unauthorized purchase in the amount of $659 at Bestbuy.com using the credit card information belonging to a Martin Lane resident, police said. Alleged Phone Scammer Tries to Bilk Thousands

A scammer calls an Upper Dublin resident and says the victim’s grandson is in trouble, according to police.

A Dresher man transferred more than $4,700 to a scammer in an attempt to “help his grandson,” Upper Dublin police said.   According to police, a man who identified himself as Michael Steele, called the 85-year-old victim on April 17 at about noon and said that he was an attorney representing the victim’s grandson who had been “arrested” following a DUI-related crash. Steele then asked the victim to send $2,500 via MoneyGram to the Howard Young Prison in Wilmington, Del. — where the victim’s grandson was being held, according to Steele’s story. Steele said that the victim could talk to his grandson, but said that “he would not sound the same” due to injuries from the so-called crash, according to the report. According to police, the victim was playing basketball.  Theft … Someone stole a black iPhone 4S worth about $800 from Upper Dublin High School on April 5 between 12:45 and 1:40 p.m., police said. Theft … Between April 1 at 5 p.m. and April 2 at 7 a.m., someone stole a license plate from a red Jeep Patriot parked at Brentwood Drive in Willow Grove, police said. A TaylorMade Theft and Other Stolen Items in Upper Dublin

The following items were stolen in Upper Dublin this week, according to police.

Theft … Someone entered an unlocked, black 2002 Acura TL parked in the 600 block of Bell Lane sometime before March 26 at 6:35 a.m. and stole a prescription bottle of medication, some change, a digital camera, a wallet and a set of TaylorMade golf clubs valued at $2,500, police said. According to police, the victim’s Heritage debit card was used to make a purchase at a Wawa in Philadelphia. The victim’s stepfather’s unlocked truck, which was parked nearby, was also entered. Police said someone stole a digital camera and $147 from the truck.  Theft … Someone stole a white smartphone with a blue case from a windowsill at the basketball court at LA Fitness on March 26, police said. A Pair of Suspected DUIs

Upper Dublin Police arrested the following people for suspicion of DUI.

  Michael R. Sarro, 42, of the 100 block of Stanley Avenue, Glenside, was arrested March 22 at about 9:30 p.m. after he crashed a gray 2012 Kia Forte into a stone wall in the 300 block of Camp Hill Road, causing heavy front passenger-side damage, police said. According to police, Sarro had a strong odor of alcohol on his breath. Sarro agreed to a breath test, which yielded a blood alcohol content readout of 0.18 percent, police said; he also had deficiencies in his field sobriety tests. A breath test at the police station at about 10 p.m. yielded a blood alcohol content of 0.148 percent, police said. Woman Arrested on Suspected DUI

Police said a woman was swerving over the double yellow lines early Sunday morning.

Upper Dublin Police arrested a Southampton woman for suspicion of DUI early on St. Patrick’s Day. Caitlin Vanhorn, 21, of the 500 block of Cushmore Drive, was arrested at about 2:41 a.m. near the corner of Friends Lane and Meetinghouse Road in Ambler after police said they saw a Silver Hyundai Elantra driven by Vanhorn swerve over the double yellow lines, crossing into the other lanes of travel. According to police, Vanhorn then stopped at a green light before making a turn, made a wide turn and crossed the double yellow lines again. She was unaware of the traffic violations, police said.  There was a smell of alcohol emanating from the vehicle, police said, and Vanhorn took a PBT which registered 0.103 percent.

Theft from a Church and More Police Reports

Someone steals from a church, someone steals a motorcycle and someone asks for some money in a roundabout way.

Theft … Someone stole about $50 from a poor box in the vestibule of St. Alphonsus Church on Conwell Drive sometime before March 13 at 9:34 a.m., police said. According to police, the person cut the pad lock to the box and took the money and the offering envelopes. There was also damage done to the donation box. Suspicious person … On March 14 at 11:30 a.m. someone called a resident of the 700 block of Honey Run Road in Ambler and told the homeowner that the homeowner had won a $1 million lottery, $10,000 in cash and a new car, police said. According to police, the caller — a man with a Middle Eastern sounding accent … who identified himself as a woman, Mary — told the homeowner to go to CVS and to buy a Green Dot money pack scratch card …

A Slashed Tire and a Hit and Run at George’s, Top Police Reports

  Criminal mischief … Someone slashed the rear driver’s side tire of a black Mazda CX-7 sport utility vehicle parked in a driveway on the 1000 block of Stevens Drive in Fort Washington  between March 10 at 6 p.m. and March 11 at about 9:30  a.m., police said. According to police, the tire had two slash marks that appeared to have been caused by a sharp object. There are currently no leads in the case. Hit and run … On March 6 at about 1:30 p.m., someone hit a blue 2012 Nissan Altima parked in the George’s Shop ‘N Bag parking lot. According to police, the victim said she was in the store for roughly 20 minutes when she came out and saw that her driver’s side rear fender had been scratched and dented. Pizza Delivery Guy Allegedly Crashes into Rock Garden

According to police, the man got lost while backing up a road.

Police said a pizza delivery man from Philadelphia got lost in Upper Dublin and ended up stuck in a rock garden. David Beal, 51, of the 8200 block of Burholme Avenue, Philadelphia, was arrested Feb. 15 shortly after 6:30 p.m. after police said he drove a cream-colored Ford Ranger onto a lawn in the 700 block of Avenue H in the Ardsley section of Upper Dublin. According to police Beal said he got lost while delivering pizza and ended up on Avenue H; Beal said he attempted to back down the street and drove across the lawn and got caught on a rock because it was dark. Beal had bloodshot and glassy eyes and smelled of alcohol, according to police. He failed a field sobriety test and had a blood alcohol content of 0.182 percent at 8:07 p.m. …
