A scammer calls an Upper Dublin resident and says the victim’s grandson is in trouble, according to police.

A Dresher man transferred more than $4,700 to a scammer in an attempt to “help his grandson,” Upper Dublin police said. According to police, a man who identified himself as Michael Steele, called the 85-year-old victim on April 17 at about noon and said that he was an attorney representing the victim’s grandson who had been “arrested” following a DUI-related crash. Steele then asked the victim to send $2,500 via MoneyGram to the Howard Young Prison in Wilmington, Del. — where the victim’s grandson was being held, according to Steele’s story. Steele said that the victim could talk to his grandson, but said that “he would not sound the same” due to injuries from the so-called crash, according to the report. The victim then withdrew money …

Upper Dublin police say a man stole money from a local business.
Police said a man stole $40 from Jimmy John’s Gourmet Sandwiches Friday afternoon. According to police, a man, described as Hispanic, 5-foot-8 with a black mustache and a thin beard, purchased a cookie from Jimmy John’s in the 3600 block of Welsh Road with a $50 bill at about 3:30 p.m. on Friday. When the employee gave the man his change, the man put two $20 bills in his left rear pants pocket. And as the employee gave the man his coin change, the man told the employee that he still needed two $20 bills. The employee looked around and gave the man $40. Criminal mischief … Someone slashed the rear driver’s side tire of a black Mazda CX-7 sport utility vehicle parked in a driveway on the 1000 block of Stevens Drive in Fort Washington between March 10 at 6 p.m. and March 11 at about 9:30 a.m., police said. An Oreland man is out of a computer after a shower, according to police. Someone stole a gray Samsung laptop, right out of its box, while the homeowner was in the shower, police said. According to Upper Dublin Police, the burglary happened Feb. 17 between 9:25 and 9:35 a.m. at a home in the 300 block of Valley Road. The homeowner said he heard a loud noise at the front door while he was in the upstairs shower; when he came downstairs, the laptop, which was sitting on the floor next to the front door, was missing, police said. There was also cash and camera sitting on a nearby coffee table, which was visible from the front door, but it wasn’t taken. The front door was unlocked. Theft … Someone stole a black, 16-gig Apple iPhone 4S from the women’s locker room at Upper Dublin High School on Jan. 14 between 8:35 and 9:25 a.m., police said. It’s unknown from which locker it was stolen, or whether the locker was locked. The complainant said the phone, which has a case on it, is valued at $600.
