PA Struggles to Pass Gun Control Laws

Many Montco politicians are pushing for measures that seem to fall flat in state legislature.

As Connecticut passes its laws to restrict gun purchases with stricter policies, similar bills in Pennsylvania's legislature are falling flat. Local rallies have been hosted in Montgomery County, and its representatives are voicing the concerns. State Rep. Madeleine Dean (D-153) of Montgomery County, has worked with state Rep. Steve Santarsiero (D-31) and state Rep. Ron Waters (D-191) on a series of bills, including the banning of assault weapons called House Bill 517, according to a report in PhillyBurbs.com. Restrictions are not just being called for one one side. Todd Stephens (R-151), a former Assistant District Attorney in Montgomery County, has introduced House Bill 931, to "require the Pennsylvania State Police to send all existing …

MontCo DA, Legislators: Parole Board Violated Victims' Rights in Robb Case

Officials say Ellen Robb's family deserves to be heard by the Pennsylvania Board of Probation and Parole; a meeting has been scheduled.

The family of Ellen Robb, the wife and mother who was brutally murdered by her husband, Rafael Robb, just before Christmas in 2006, has been granted an opportunity to speak to the Pennsylvania Board of Probation and Parole regarding its recent decision to release Robb from prison after officials uncovered a law requiring the board to give victims a voice in the parole process. Montgomery Count District Attorney Risa Vetri Ferman, State Representatives Mike Vereb (R-150) and Todd Stephens (R-151), and Ellen Robb’s brother, Gary Gregory, announced that Ellen’s family would be meeting with the chairman of the parole board next week. “The opportunity to meet with the chairman of the parole board is a terrific development and a step forward …

Election 2012: 151st District Race

Incumbent Todd Stephens and Democrat Will Sylianteng compete for the legislative district which covers Horsham, Upper Dublin, Ambler, Montgomery Township and Abington.

For Democrat Will Sylianteng, the man contesting incumbent State Rep. Todd Stephens for his seat representing the 151st legislative district, sums up Tuesday as a "good day one way or the other." "We’re at polling places introducing ourselves to people as they come in," Sylianteng told Patch of he and his 30 or so volunteers in place at some of the district's three dozen polling places throughout Horsham, Upper Dublin, Ambler, Montgomery Township and Abington. "You actually go face-to-face with an actual voter." It's different than the 14,000 doors Sylianteng knocked while talking to people who, he said may or may not even cast a vote in the 2012 election. To actually see them about to do that makes for a "pretty enjoyable day," he said. …

New Bill Would Redistribute Casino Funds Back to Montco

HB 2552 proposes that new revenue generated by the Valley Forge Casino and Resort be distributed to local parks and heritage sites and non-profits.

On Monday, July 16, the Montgomery County Commissioners, along with state Representatives Marcy Toepel (R-147), Mike Vereb (R-150) and Todd Stephens (R-151), held a press conference to reveal new legislation that would redistribute casino revenue from the county’s share assessment. If House Bill 2552 is passed, the casino would give 2% of its gross revenue back to the community – 75% of that will be going to maintenance and refurbishment services of parks and heritage sites, while the final 25% would be split evenly between local nonprofits Laurel House and Mission Kids. "An estimated $1.2 million will be generated. $900,000 to the parks and heritage sites, and $150,000 each to Mission Kids and Laurel House," explained Toepel. Currently, …

Mission Kids is the DA's charity - Risa Vetri Ferman is co-founder of it. So, yeah, from outward appearances it's a good cause but it wouldn't get this kind of boost if the county's Top Cop wasn't behind it. And Laurel House is a home for victims of domestic abuse - could be the GOP's way of apologizing for Tom Ellis.   more ›
