250 Jobs Coming to Horsham Air Guard Station

Officials announced that a drone command center will take flight in Horsham as of Oct. 1.

The flying mission of the 111th Fighter Wing may have been grounded, but officials said a new mission is in sight at the Horsham Air Guard Station. The U.S. Air Force has chosen the Pennsylvania Air National Guard's 111th Fighter Wing, located at the 238-acre Horsham Air Guard Station, adjacent to the shuttered Willow Grove air base, to take on a new Remotely Piloted Aircraft mission. The National Guard Bureau has authorized the wing to establish a ground-control station for the MQ-9 Reaper at the Horsham Air Guard Station effective Oct. 1. "This is an exciting time for our wing, and our Airmen are energized to embrace this new mission," Col. Howard "Chip" Eissler, 111th Fighter Wing commander said in a press release issued Tuesday. "I'm …

Sorry - that's 20 years....I guess that means that they will be available on the commercial market, and the FAA has no plans to set limits on their use? So much to consider, Congress had better get to work and get some good laws in place or we will have a real mess on our hands...   more ›

Meehan Vows Support for Base Reuse

The Congressman said his first step would be to work to ensure transportation funding for the project, which could take 20 years to build out.

Following a tour of the shuttered Willow Grove air base Friday with local and state officials, Congressman Pat Meehan pledged his support for federal help in redeveloping the lion’s share of the 1,100-acre parcel. Meehan (R-7), who will represent a large portion of Horsham – provided the congressional redistricting is not challenged as was the case with the redistricting maps for state representatives - told press gathered at Lancers Diner in Horsham that his hope is to “get a baseline on understanding exactly what is at play.”  “My impression is what a remarkable opportunity for this region,” Meehan said, noting the benefits of the region’s transportation and other attributes. “How does that fit into the plans that are being made for our …

Too bad there couldn't been a government auction for parts of the base. There could be industrial manufacturing on the base instead of empty office space.   more ›

HLRA Says 'No' to Airport

The Horsham Land Reuse Authority on Wednesday denied two applications for airport operations at Willow Grove air base.

Against the backdrop of about 400 cheering, clapping community members, the Horsham Land Reuse Authority, once and for all, grounded plans for any future use of the runway at Willow Grove air base. The HLRA, during a three-and-a-half hour meeting Wednesday night, voted down notices of interest—or applications—from Montgomery County, as well as the Bucks County Airport Authority. Both entities, in their competing applications, had hoped to secure the lion’s share of 892 acres available for redevelopment at the closing military base.  After the meeting, HLRA Chairman W. William Whiteside confirmed that an airport could no longer crop up as a possible redevelopment use. “It’s out of the question,” Whiteside said, adding that the notices of …

uh huh ... Well, I'll be keeping my eye out for all these revelations. Seems kinda odd that so much "corruption" might be involved given that NOTHING - including ownership of the property - has even been decided yet. No contracts let - aside from the consultant, no developers involved, not even the unions have gotten their snouts into the trough yet. Weird ... and now you've gotten my …   more ›

Airport Vs. No Airport Tops Community Wish List

In the days leading up to the Horsham Land Reuse Authority's meeting on Wednesday, dozens have flooded email inboxes vying for or against an airport.

Like kids eagerly awaiting the holidays, the wish lists are pouring in. The item on everyone’s list—whether for or against—is an airport. And to prove their points, airport proponents and opponents alike are flooding -mail inboxes. All in an attempt to have their voices heard and their wish met, dozens have sent letters in the last week alone to the Horsham Land Reuse Authority, copying Montgomery County Commissioners, Bucks County Commissioners and elected officials neighboring Horsham Township where the 1,100-acre Willow Grove air base is located. But, unlike Santa Claus, the HLRA—the entity charged with finally ending the airport versus no airport decision—likely won’t answer everyone’s wish when, on Wednesday, the board finally weighs …

i expect the board to make an unemotional decision on the usage of the tract. i haven't heard an estimate of the cost of removing the runway, but i'm sure it's huge. the residents of horsham are not the only stakeholders- the economic impact on the region of losing the base and replacing it with some combination of uses that exceed the base's contribution should be the primary consideration. …   more ›
