One reader asks Melissa about keeping her child calm in the checkout lines.
It’s that time of the week again! Here at Patch, we try to take a moment to help out those most important people in everyone’s life: moms. Believe it or not, we don’t have all the answers, but we do what we can. When we come up short, we need the community to lend a helping hand and put in its two cents, advice or tips to help us along the way. This week, we’ll take a look at one reader’s question regarding begging. "Dear Patch, Each week, I have the same issue with my daughter. We have to do the grocery shopping, and I prefer to go when my older son and daughter are in school. I am a stay-at-home mom, and so I have to bring along my daughter who is just 3. She does fairly well in the store, sitting in the cart, but every week I dread the…

This week, Patch takes a look at sports. Moms and dads across the county are starting up spring sports with their children. And, one reader asked how much is too much when it comes to sports.
“Hi, Melissa. I love your Mom Talk column each week, and I have a battle of my own at our house. I was wondering what you might think. My son wants to play two sports this season. He is really into baseball, but some of his friends from school are also playing soccer. I asked him to pick just one, but his dad thinks it is OK to play two different sports at one time. My son is only 8, so I feel like sports nearly every night of the week, on top of going to school, is going to be overwhelming for him. How much do you think is too much?” Lynn M., of Collegeville --- Thanks for the question, Lynn. I’m glad you are reading and enjoying our Mom Talk weekly feature. I’ll lend you my two cents on the matter of sports. First, I think it is only …

This week's topic: Mobile phones for your children.
We’ve asked our readers for their tough questions, and we’ve heard the call. Each week, we hope to bring our moms out there an answer to a topic that interests them most. Today, we took one from a reader in Audubon. “My son is only 6. He is already asking me for a cell phone. I think he is way too young, but I know the times, they are a-changing. My parents didn’t have this question since we didn’t have phones like this when we were kids. What is the right age to give a kid a phone?” -Miranda, of Audubon Well, Miranda, to be honest, there probably isn’t a perfect age to answer this question. Though there isn’t a solid line or rule, I would vote personally that a child be ready. I would say my son will have to be at least 10 before I …

Don't spend lots of cash with every changing season-- check out our guide for spring consignment sales and nab necessities for value prices.
With spring quickly approaching, it’s almost time for families to change wardrobes to accommodate the much anticipated warmer weather. Families with growing children know it can be a daunting and pretty expensive task a couple times a year. Luckily, there are many opportunities for finding great deals on gently used clothing, as well as toys and other baby necessities, at many area consignment sales. These semi-annual sales tend to be held in early spring and again in early fall every year. Moms and dads have been able to find a wide variety of treasures from shoes to strollers, blankets to bathing suits, maternity wear to mattresses, and so much more. With the rising popularity of these sales, keep in mind that there will be crowds, …

Need some theater but don't want to head downtown?
It’s that time of week once again for a little Mom Talk. Patch takes the chance to inform our readers: moms, dads, grandparents and family friends alike, to inform you each week of something new. This week, we take a question from a reader in Norristown. Dear Patch: I want my kids to have a little bit of culture in their lives. I don’t think they are quite ready for a Broadway show, but I’d love to work more live theater into their routine. Do you know of any good spots in Montgomery County to have them experience that? I feel like a trip downtown might be too much, and at their ages (6 and 10), I am not sure what levels would be best. Any suggestions? Sincerely, Janet M., of Norristown Thanks, Janet for the question. There are a number …

Moms Talk is a new feature on our Patch sites that is part of a new initiative to reach out to moms and families
Patch invites you and your circle of friends to help build a community of support for mothers and their families right here in your community. Each week in Moms Talk, our Moms Council of experts and smart moms take your questions, give advice and share solutions. Moms Talk will also be the place to drop in for a talk about the latest parenting hot topic. Do you know of local moms raising their children in the Tiger Mother's way, and is it the best way? Where can we get …

Some supermarkets have candy-free check-out lines. Ours did, and still may. If yours does not, you may want to speak to the manager and see if there could be such an aisle.   more ›
