GOP Sues County Officials Over Voter Services Appointment

Republicans have filed a lawsuit to remove Michael Paston as acting director of Montgomery County Voter Services, alleging that commissioners Josh Shapiro and Leslie Richards appointed him illegally.

The Montgomery County Republican Committee (MCRC) has sued commissioners Josh Shapiro and Leslie Richards and county employee Michael Paston regarding Paston’s position as “acting director” of the voter services department since the firing of long-time director Joseph Passarella in April. The suit alleges that Shapiro and Richards illegally appointed Paston, former Democrat elected official and current county archivist and print shop manager, to the post without approval from the salary board, according to the suit. According to a Margaret Gibbons article in Phillyburbs.com, sources say Shapiro and Richards wanted to immediately appoint Paston to the position but did not have the votes necessary.  Republican Commissioner Bruce Castor and…

Because of his background, Paston is qualified to run the print shop. As far as voter services, this is purely a political appointment. Why don't you guys just have the balls to say that. It would at least be honest. Why won't Castor and Greenleaf support Paston?? Castor has been very bipartisan in his dealings on the Board of Commissioners, maybe, because the appointment sucks!!!   more ›

Norristown Foreclosure Could Cost County $24M

After Montgomery County denied an additional $11 million loan for what it considers a nonviable development project, the lender filed for foreclosure on Logan Square in Norristown.

The senior lender behind the Logan Square development project, located at Markley Street and West Johnson Highway in Norristown, filed for foreclosure on the property on May 3, putting in jeopardy a $24.5 million investment the county made to the development between 2009 and 2011. The project began in 2007 when Charles Gallub, principal at Develcom in Bellmawr, NJ, began working with government officials and a private investment group, Axis Advisors, LP, to develop the 24.5 acre site, including the abandoned Sears and Ports of the World, totaling 150,000 square feet in retail space. A plan to bring Raleigh Studios to the property fell through after failed negotiations over tax credits with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and the plan …

More pipe dreams. In a desperate attempt to "save" Norristown everyone signed off on this project when the economy was tanking. No one did their due diligence on this on. As soom as all the financing was in place and they were ready to move into their newly renovated building USM sells to Emcor, deals like this take more than a few months to put together. What about th 600 jobs they were going to…   more ›

Letter to the Editor: Shapiro Says County Voter ID Initiative Unanimous, Bipartisan

Shapiro: 'Troubled' by Corbett Administration's 'inappropriate' comment

To the editor: Earlier this year, Pennsylvania passed a new law requiring voters to show an ID in order to vote. While at first blush, this may sound sensible to some, it will likely have the effect of suppressing the rights of certain voters who do not meet the new strict standards. In Montgomery County alone, according to a report from the commonwealth, over 49,000 people either do not have the necessary identification to be able to vote or there is some question about their ID card.  While my opposition to this new law is well-documented (I voted against it when I served in the State House), as the Chairman of the Montgomery County Commissioners I took an oath to uphold all of the laws of the commonwealth —even those I disagree with. …

Fact is, it is circumventing the law's intent via a loophole. Loopholes are just fine for Democrats with political intents; but when perfectly legal tax shelters are implemented - as anyone with two brain cells to rub together would - to preserve one's personal finances, it's a sign of "flawed character". Cases of West Nile virus Found throughout Montgomery County

According to Montco Board of Commissioners chair, Josh Shapiro, the best way of avoiding West Nile Virus is by eliminating its source's breeding grounds.

Since surveillance testing has indicated West Nile virus (WNV) activity is present throughout the county, the Montgomery County Health Department wants to remind residents that the risk of WNV is strong and may remain so for some time this season, thus the focus should be on personal protection. There have been 75 mosquito pools which tested positive for WNV so far this season, compared to 31 positive pools during the same period last year. The first positive test was reported on May 17 this year, compared to June 9 last year.  A mosquito pool is a collection of mosquitoes (usually about 50) of any given species or group (i.e. Culex mosquitoes) that are likely to carry/transmit a virus. WNV is transmitted to people by infected mosquitoes…

Values, Vision Topics of First Lady's Speech in Montco [PHOTOS]

The values and the vision for this country are reasons why President Obama is running for second term.

More than 1,500 people were fired up on Thursday to see First Lady Michelle Obama at the Upper Dublin High School gymnasium. Dan Siegel, the Montgomery County regional field director for Obama's re-election campaign, told the audience that in 2009, his mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. He said they were lucky to have full health insurance to cover to costs of her medical expenses. However, he added that the Affordable Care Act, passed by President Obama, means his mother's illness will never be considered a pre-existing condition and cannot be grounds for denial of health coverage. Montgomery County Commissioner Josh Shapiro said he and his wife spent time at the White House and were surprised by how much the President and First …

And this is the real issue. The partisan divide is a fiction created to divert attention from this issue. The economy of state of California is something like 20% of US GDP IIRCC and it's having all sorts of issues along with other states. Its problem is the same as many other states and the government--debt. Do you really think the US can remain economically viable if CA or NY goes down the …   more ›
