Kids are at High Risk for Eye Injuries From Fireworks

The American Academy of Ophthalmology offers these tips for keeping your kids' eyes safe this Fourth of July.

Fireworks are a traditional part of Independence Day celebrations, but they can also be dangerous. Sadly, children and teens are too often hurt by fireworks. So before the celebration begins, read these fireworks safety tips from the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO). According to the AAO, of the 9,000 fireworks-related injuries each year, 21% are eye injuries and more than half of the victims are young children or teenagers. Monica, M.D., an ophthalmologist and clinical correspondent for the American Academy of Ophthalmology. "The safest choice is to attend a professional …

Can I Buy Fireworks in Upper Dublin?

If you have any questions about buying fireworks, the State Police might have the answer

The following information comes courtesy of the Pennsylvania State Police. Due to the upcoming July 4th holiday and summer season, here are some FAQs regarding fireworks. Q: Can I use fireworks in Pennsylvania? A: State law prohibits the use of Consumer and Display Fireworks in Pennsylvania without a permit. Items defined as “ground and hand-held sparkling devices”, “novelties” and “toy caps” in American Pyrotechnics Association (APA) Standard 87-1 are not currently regulated by State Law; therefore, their sale and use are permissible. These “non-fireworks” are the only types allowed to be sold from tents, stands, convenience stores, retail establishments and other various outlets not licensed by the Department of Agriculture. That is usually up to the discretion of the person at the gate of each ride, as far as I know, but I would say if you ask nicely and have a cute kid, you have a chance. You can also just buy tickets for individual rides instead of getting the bracelet, which would probably come out better with a 2 year old anyway.   more ›

Dreshertown Plaza Fireworks Tent a Legal Operation

Both township officials and a Patch investigation found nothing illegal.

The big white tent selling fireworks outside the Dreshertown Shop n Bag is completely legal, according to Upper Dublin Township officials and a Patch investigation. After we ran a story detailing how the Montgomery County District Attorney’s office released a reminder for residents that many fireworks are illegal, a number of Patch readers mailed in to decry the stand. “Maybe the township should take the high road and not let those clowns sell fireworks in Upper Dublin,” said one reader. “Allowing them to have these tents... is showing people mixed messages that they are OK to buy. Then, when someone gets hurt it becomes a problem, when in fact they shouldn't be allowed to have them,” said another. However, the truth of the matter is that …

DA's Office: Fireworks are Illegal

Police departments in Montco are 'giving priority' to fireworks complaints this weekend

The staccato pops of strings of firecrackers are already audible throughout many neighborhoods in Montgomery County, but District Attorney Risa Ferman and county sheriff Eileen Behr want to remind you: they are against the law. Firecrackers, along with "pinwheels, torpedoes, jumping jacks, skyrockets, bottle rockets, roman candles, aerial fireworks, blockbusters and cherry bombs," are illegal fireworks under the state's Health & Safety Act, the district attorney's office said in a Wednesday press release. "Anyone who uses, sells or transports these materials without the appropriate permit is subject to arrest on charges of illegal transportation of explosive devices, risking a catastrophe, arson, assault and other charges stemming from the…
