Vereb, Corbett Show Support for State Police

New act and state budget will combine for more support of PSP.

Rep. Mike Vereb (R-Montgomery) used to be in law enforcement himself. As a former officer, he said funding for the Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) is a crucial need. “Proposals to increase state police funding died under the former administration, but thanks to Gov. Corbett’s leadership, the legislature worked together in a bipartisan manner to ensure that the Pennsylvania State Police has funding for 100 new cadets this year under the 2012-13 state budget,” Vereb said in a statement released on Monday. “Public safety is one the most important jobs of any government and securing adequate funds to fight crime in communities across Pennsylvania is one of my top priorities, without increasing spending or implementing any new taxes on our …

Corbett's Plan: 'Corporate Welfare' or Jobs Stimulus?

Largest taxpayer-supported incentives package in state history

Governor Tom Corbett spoke at a Harrisburg news conference this week to present “the largest taxpayer-paid financial incentives project in Pennsylvania history," the Associated Press reports. The move comes as Netherlands-based Royal Dutch Shell PLC has inked a preliminary deal to build a large refinery about 30 miles northwest of Pittsburgh.  Watch the video to see Gov. Corbett talk about the proposed Shell refinery in March. The proposed tax credit would take effect in 2017 and be worth up to $66 million a year to the energy company for 25 years. Characterized by Corbett as an effort to "invest in a new industrial revolution," the plan's supporters say it would create as many as 17,000 "spin-off jobs," in addition to the 400 jobs at the …

Hard to argue with the "direct approach" of luring a REAL job creator, as opposed to simply throwing mountains of cash at the Economy and hoping something sticks and grows. With the incredible amount of natural gas sitting under PA, it's a natural fit! From The Inquirer piece: "The Shell plant, to be built in Beaver County, would turn by-products of the Marcellus Shale natural gas drilling into …   more ›

Corbett's Approval Drops to 36 Percent

Fewer Pennsylvanians think Gov. Tom Corbett is doing a good job

By Melissa Daniels | PA Independent  HARRISBURG — Gov. Tom Corbett hit an all-time low this week. Thirty-six percent of voters approve of the way the first-term governor and former Pennsylvania attorney general is doing his job, compared with 47 percent who disapprove, according to a new Quinnipiac University poll.   Do you approve of the governor's job performance? Vote in our poll and tell us in the comments section below. But these figures don’t bother Corbett — he doesn’t read polls, he said. “If I was looking at the polls, I wouldn’t be doing some of the things I’m doing, would I?” Corbett said.  The poll queried 997 registered voters from June 5-10 with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points. Corbett's approval …

bill, once again you're muddying up things with facts...rendell did what he usually does when in office: cut a swath of destruction. afterward, if the replacement if from the other party, rectification is in order and quickly pounced upon by the left. the 'stimulus' money was an overt con seized upon with no regard for the future. now that the artificial infusion is gone, Corbett deals with …   more ›

POLL: Governor Corbett Presents Budget Proposal

Proposes cuts to education funding and the elimination of 600+ state jobs, but no tax increases.

Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett presented his budget proposal to both houses of the state legislature Tuesday and, as expected, it reflects the state’s difficult financial situation. There are plenty of cuts to address the state’s revenue shortfall, but it does not include any tax increases. In fact, Corbett said he would work with lawmakers on the budget but said tax increases were not an option. Early Tuesday morning philly.com reported that aid to state universities would be cut 20% to 30%, which Corbett confirmed early in his speech. Pitt, Temple and Penn State would see aid cut 30% while other state system schools would see aid cut 20% under Corbett’s plan according to PennLive.com's Twitter feed. Community colleges would see a 4% …

For public education this is a cut. The accountability block grant is eliminated and some other things are rolled into 1 line item while bits and pieces are being cut or eliminated. Corbett is quite simply a liar. The overall cut to public education pre K-12 will be anywhere from 70-90 million even with the 3.7% increase in the basic education subsidy.   more ›

Mayor Nutter, Gov. Corbett and More Thank Volunteers and Residents

Several officials gathered for a press conference by Kelly Drive in East Falls Sunday evening.

The sun was shining brightly as a signifier that Hurricane Irene was over as Mayor Michael Nutter (D), Gov. Tom Corbett (R) and a handful of other local officials gathered for a press conference in East Falls Sunday evening. If it wasn’t for the Schuylkill River still overflowing above Kelly Drive, you might not have known the storm took place at all. Nutter was thanking police, PECO employees and clean-up crews for the hours of work they had put in during and after the hurricane. “PECO really has been kicking it out, with about 4,000 people on the ground. They brought people in days ago to get ready for this event. They’ve been turning that service back on throughout the day,” Nutter said. He added that there are still some heavy winds, …
