Sequestration in Montgomery County

Sequestration: A Cut for Montco's Seniors

Part Two of a Four-Part Series: How budget cuts may impact local senior citizens.

Another 24 hours is lost, and Congress has yet to agree on a plan that would stop sequestration. The automated budget cuts will deliver a hit to Montgomery County programs, including those designed to assist area senior citizens. In a recent Wall Street Journal op-ed, House Speaker John Boehner said the cuts would be a product of Obama's "failed leadership." "Most Americans are just hearing about this Washington creation for the first time: the sequester," Boehner writes in his column. "What they might not realize from Mr. Obama's statements is that it is a product of the president's own failed leadership. There is nothing wrong with cutting spending that much -- we should be cutting even more -- but the sequester is an ugly and dangerous …

Who's fault is it? Who cares? This fighting is not fixing of our problems. Its a cover for the immaturity and incompetence of our elected officials. ALL OF THEM. The point is we have daunting problems facing our country and NOBODY has the guts, brains, or leadership qualifications to effectively address them so, we keep doing the same things over and over again hoping for a different outcome. Violence Against Women Act Supports Laurel House, Montco Organizations

Congress must pass VAWA in order for funding to be maintained. Casey supporting the Act.

Last year, 530 adults were turned away from a shelter in Bucks and Montgomery counties due to lack of room, said a report on PhillyBurbs.com. "Should Congress fail to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), which pays for programs that help victims of domestic violence, U.S. Sen. Bob Casey, D-Pa., said it would encourage 'a terrible, horrific betrayal of who we are as a people' and make it more difficult to help victims," said the article. VAWA, according to WhiteHouse.gov's fact sheet, is credited with decreasing domestic violence against women by 67 percent from 1993 to 2010. The fact sheet calls the Act a "landmark federal legislation’s comprehensive approach to violence against women combined tough new provisions to hold …

Tea Party Pushing for Secret Ballot in House Speaker Election

The national group is asking supporters to call Congress to push for a secret ballot in the election, scheduled for Noon today.

Tea Party Patriots National is pushing constituents to call Congress and request a secret ballot vote for its Speaker of the House vote, which will occur Jan. 3 around noon. A secret ballot vote is what many believe to be a step in the Tea Party's plan to oust House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH), who many conservatives thought underperformed in the fiscal cliff talks, and eventual outcome  - the "American Taxpayer Relief Act." In an e-mail sent last night to Montgomery County Tea Party Patriots, the group said that the power of elected officials sent to Washington in 2010 has been “squandered by establishment types blackmailing, bullying and bribing rank-and-file members to go along to get along. “Your representatives deserves to be able …

Regarding: "“You can’t beat somebody with nobody,” a senior House Republican told National Journal." There are plenty of others who would stand up for fiscal responsibility in the House. Interestingly, there were a few votes for Eric Cantor and 2 for Allen West. Those who openly voted for others, such as Louie Gohmert of Texas, will likely be ostracized because of that principled stand. This is a…   more ›

Letter to the Editor: Pleased With the Voter ID Ruling

Republican candidate Joe Rooney, who is seeking a seat in the 13th Congressional District, chimes in on Wednesday's Voter ID ruling.

Joe Rooney, who is running for a seat in the 13th Congressional District, issued the following statement on Thursday after Commonwealth Court Judge Robert Simpson ruled to uphold the law that requires every Pennsylvania voter to show a valid photo ID before being allowed to vote.  "I applaud the decision of Commonwealth Court Judge Robert Simpson to uphold Pennsylvania’s voter identification law. Judge Simpson concluded in a thoughtful, nonpartisan 70 page decision that the law did not violate the Pennsylvania State Constitution. PA voters now have almost three months to ensure that they possess the necessary identification to vote. Additionally, the law allows voters to cast a provisional ballot which will be counted once the proper ID is…

The premise of the Voter ID law is to reduce the chance of "voter fraud". This is a big load of steaming crap. Since 2000 there have been 10 cases brought for PA courts for voter fraud, 4 have been convicted. PA voter have gone to the pole over 600 million times since then. The only fraud perpetrated here is by the Republican party of PA. Furthermore Mike Turzai, Speaker of the House of PA (R) …   more ›

Realtors Heading to Washington, D.C. Rally

The Rally to Protect the American Dream has real estate agents telling Congress that home ownership matters

The National Association of Realtors has a planned event today in Washington, D.C. known as the “Rally to Protect the American Dream.” Most people don’t know about the extra efforts many realtors put forth for their industry, livelihood, and most importantly, clients.  Realtors across the country are gathering on Capital Hill to tell members of Congress that home ownership matters to people, to communities and to America. The goal of the rally is to make Congress aware that Realtors are focused on homeownership, housing and real estate issues amidst the election year rhetoric.  The aim is to fight obstacles that make it more difficult for people to buy, own, and invest in real estate.  The obstacles that many in the real estate industry …

Maybe home ownership could be a little more financially friendly to the potential buyer by lowering or eliminating some of the outrageously high closing costs which are inclusive of many fees, transfer taxes, and other charges. The practice of mortgage companies requiring a year's worth of taxes/insurance is another practice that seems ridiculous. There is no need to require that much in escrow …   more ›
