Backyard Chicken Ordinance Heads Back To Planning Commission

The amended proposal would increase restrictions on both lot size and coup location.

Following Tuesday night’s public discussion on the pending backyard chicken ordinance, the Upper Dublin Board of Commissioners unanimously voted to amend the proposal, which is now headed back to the planning commission for review. The original proposal would have allowed residents with at least half-an-acre to keep up to six chickens, so long as the coup was positioned at least 25-feet away from both the residence and the perimeter of the property, but the amended ordinance would increase both the required lot size and the coup restrictions. “I’d like to increase the lot-acre size from half-an-acre to one acre, and also increase the setbacks on the property from 25 feet to 40 feet for the side and rear properties,” said Ronald Feldman, …

Times are going to get much harder and people are looking for ways to pay for taxes through excessive spending on needless projects and buying food for their families. This is just more control to prevent self sufficiency.   more ›

Upper Dublin 'Reluctantly' Drops $1.3 Million Claim against Milestone Construction

Nine years of litigation end unexpectedly when the township discovers the bonding company was bankrupt.

The Upper Dublin Board of Commissioners has unanimously approved a resolution to withdraw their claim against Milestone Construction Management, following a March 7th suggestion by Montgomery County Court of Common Pleas Judge Del Ricci that all parties consider a "wash" and walk away. The lawsuit dates back to January of 2003, when Upper Dublin township terminated their contract with Milestone Construction Management, who was working on the Upper Dublin Township Police and Municipal Facility on Loch Alsh Avenue. Upper Dublin claimed to have terminated the contract "with cause," citing construction problems and quality concerns. "There were enormous construction issues," said Ira Tackel, president of the Upper Dublin Board of Commissioners…

Upper Dublin Township Responds to Transparency Criticism

Points to 'B' transparency rating by non-profit Sunshine Review and efforts to involve residents.

Two recent transparency critiques paint different lights on Upper Dublin Township. The first, a critique from the Sunshine Review, a nonprofit organization dedicated to state and local government transparency, gave Upper Dublin Township's website a solid 'B' rating, concluding the township met criteria in eight of ten categories. However, a recent editorial in the Ambler Gazette, headlined "Upper Dublin budget process kept many residents in the dark," criticized what the paper saw as an ethical failure of the township to post an updated 2012 budget proposal to its website prior to the Board of Commissioners voting for its adoption on Dec. 13. Sunshine Review's 'B' rating Township staff members, including technology administrator Deb …

County Departments Plead for Funding

Moody's backtracks and reissues 'negative' outlook on county's bond rating; incoming board may be legally unable to revisit 2012 budget.

The heads of Montgomery County's various departments queued up Tuesday before the county's Board of Commissioners to plead their respective budget cases as the county works to close a $44 million budget shortfall. The discussions took place as the county learned that Moody's Investor Service erred last week in calling the outlook on the county's Aaa bond rating "stable." Moody's retains a "negative" outlook for the county's ability to maintain its top-shelf creditworthiness. The pressure on the current board was ratcheted up further by county solicitor James Maza, who said state law may prevent the incoming Board of Commissioners from revisiting the budget in January, even if it wants to. Maza presented the commissioners with a written …

State Rep: 'Not Much We Can Do' on Casino Revenue

County government sidelined as state agency decides which local projects will receive gaming funds.

As construction continues on the Valley Forge Casino Resort alongside Route 422, Montgomery County's legislative contingent in Harrisburg has informed the county that there's "not much" it can do to take control of the revenue generated by the planned facility's gaming activity. Rather than having direct control over the 2 percent "host fee" the gaming facility must pay, those funds will instead be doled out to county agencies selected by the Commonwealth Financing Authority. State Representative Robert Godshall (R-53, Montgomery) told the county's commissioners in a letter that changing the arrangement would require the introduction of a new gaming bill. "By virtue of its nature, [a bill] would attract dozens of amendments and be …
