I think the PA Republicans wanted to solidify the Sixth (Jim Gerlach) but it's a shame that congressional representation in Montgomery County is spread over 5 districts.I know the county Republicans opposed the last redistricting but the pols in Harrisburg was calling the shots.   more ›

Schwartz Awarded 'Legislator of Year'

U.S. Rep. Allyson Schwartz (PA-13) was given the 2013 ACT award.

Greater Valley Forge is thankful for the work she does, and the organization wanted her to know it. GVF's Executive Director Rob Henry and Assistant Director Maureen Farrell presented U.S. Representative Allyson Y. Schwartz (PA-13) with the 2013 ACT "Legislator of the Year" award for "her work in Congress to support transit funding, commuter benefits and infrastructure initiatives in Pennsylvania," according to a recent release from GVF's Carissa Bobenchik. The Association for Commuter Transportation (ACT) is a national organization, said Bobenchik, that "works to expand options for commuters and last week marked its seventh annual Legislative Summit in Washington, D.C." "As GVF advocates and promotes a viable transportation network for …

Daylin Leach Running for U.S. Congress

The Pennsylvania State Senator hopes to succeed Allyson Schwartz in the 13th Congressional District seat in 2014.

Pennsylvania State Senator Daylin Leach announced Tuesday that he will seek election to U.S. Congress in the 13th Congressional District in 2014, hoping to succeed Rep. Allyson Schwartz (D). Schwartz has announced her own intention to challenge incumbent Tom Corbett for Governor of Pennsylvania in 2014. Leach, calling himself the “Liberal Lion of Pennsylvania” in a YouTube video announcing his candidacy, represents Norristown, Upper Merion, Conshohocken, and much of the Main Line area in the State Legislature. He said he is running for Congress to end injustice and discrimination, based on his experiences as a Jewish American and watching the civil rights struggle as a child, according to a letter on his website. Also, Leach learned from …

Hi,Stop. Exactly right. No recognition that she works for us. Look at what she has done...or hasn't done...as far as her job in DC. Few bills introduced, fewer bills passed (before 2010, now none). I understand she keeps getting elected because her staff is superior in constituent services. If folks were interested in the work she was elected to do, would this continue?.   more ›

Schwartz Admits It: She's Going for Governor

The local rep tells press 'It's my intention' to run in the 2014 race.

She admitted it. Allyson Schwartz told the Philadelphia Daily News "It is my intention" to run for governor against incumbent Gov. Tom Corbett. After months of speculating such, it is nearing the stages of being totally official. Schwartz, who currently serves as the U.S. Representative for the 13th District, which encompasses much of Montgomery County, said she plans to throw her hat into the ring for the 2014 race. The rep told USA Today that she is dissappointed in Corbett's term due to the "lack of leadership, vision and effectiveness of this governor." As Patch reported in February, the decision may make the county a hotbed for the future governor's race. As it stands, Bruce Castor, who serves as the minority Republican commissioner …

Ms Schwartz, I wish I could say something constructive on your behalf and maybe I should just stop right there. But seriously, you should consider reversing your intent to run for the office of Gov. of the Great Keystone State. Your credentials show me nothing that would cause me to cast a vote in your favor. For sure there are more qualified persons that would do justice to the office.   more ›

Local Politicians Weigh in on Sequestration

Toomey and Schwartz may not see eye-to-eye on looming sequester cuts.

Over the course of the week, Patch has outlined just a handful of the many departments in Montgomery County that may be impacted should sequester go into action. If Congress does nothing to change it, the automatic budget cuts will begin officially Thursday at midnight. With just a few more hours on the clock, a compromise is not likely. Pennsylvania politicians sure have their doubts. "I'm not sure the federal government has demonstrated it's qualified to teach financial literacy," said U.S. Sen. Pat Toomey during a conference call Wednesday. After the White House report was released, showing the impacts to Pennsylvania, U.S. Rep. Allyson Schwartz said she blames Republicans in Congress for not cooperating. “The report confirms what we …

2014 Governor's Race Could Include Sestak

The former 7th district Congressman would not rule out a challenge to Republican incumbent Tom Corbett. He would join a crowded field.

Former Congressman Joe Sestak has not closed the door on a run for the Pa. governor's office in 2014. Sestak, who did not seek re-election to his 7th District seat in 2010, told the Delaware County Times on Tuesday that he wants to run for public office again, but would not be more specific. If Sestak does throw his hat in the ring for next year's Democratic primary, he could be joining a crowded field. 13th District Congresswoman Allyson Schwartz, who has not publicly declared her candidacy but is said to be leaning towards a run, is widely regarded as the leading Democratic challenger to Republican incumbent Governor Tom Corbett, who has been plagued by weak polls and job approval ratings. State Treasurer Rob McCord is atop the pile of …

Montco Could Become the Hotbed for 2014 Governor Race

Montco Could Become the Hotbed for 2014 Governor Race

Two politicians from the county may face-off in a race for the state's seat.

Of course, nothing is set in stone just yet, but with phrases like "80 percent sure" and "pragmatism and practicality" being floated around, it is possible that Montgomery County may be home to a hot race in the 2014 Pennsylvania governor's race. Montgomery County Commissioner Bruce Castor has not put a percentage on his desire to enter the race, but has said he is keeping a close eye on the current governor, Tom Corbett's actions in the second half of his term. "I'm not going to run just to make a splash. I want Pennsylvania to go down the right path," Castor said in an interview with Pennsylvania Cable Network, covered by Patch in January. "I want Pennsylvania to be a conservative state, but with pragmatism and practicality. I don't see …

Rep. Schwartz Helps Introduce 'Marketplace Fairness Act'

The act would allow states to require online retailers to collect and remit sales tax.

On Thursday, U.S. Rep. Allyson Schwartz joined a bipartisan group of 53 Senators and Representatives to introduce the Marketplace Fairness Act, HR 684, which gives states the ability to require online companies that do not have a physical presence in the state to collect and remit state sales tax. The Marketplace Fairness Act would ensure that local retailers are able to compete with out-of-state internet retailers and would prevent states from losing hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue every year.  According to a Carnegie Mellon University study, Pennsylvania lost between $254 and $410 million in uncollected revenues last year. “It is essential we ensure that all businesses compete on a level playing field,” Schwartz said. “This …

Increasing taxes on people who are evading taxes that are helping big business helps small business (just as tariffs are used to protect small, home businesses). You see, small businesses do not have so large of an internet presence to sell things all over the country while large businesses do. These large businesses then are able to use their presence and the tax loophole to sell to people (at a…   more ›

Schwartz Releases Statement Following President’s Speech

U.S. Rep. Allyson Schwartz, D-13, released statements following the President’s speech on gun control yesterday; the NRA weighed in on the President's speech as well.

Schwartz supported President Obama’s recommendations in a written statement: Now is the time for us to take action to end the senseless loss of life that occurs almost daily across our country due to gun violence. I applaud President Obama and Vice President Biden for reaching out to the many factions in this debate and calling for meaningful action to reduce gun violence. I strongly support the President’s proposal announced today, which represents a comprehensive plan to keep guns out of the wrong hands, increase gun safety, and prevent future acts of gun violence. While President Obama took executive action today to reduce gun violence, there is still more work to be done to ensure our communities, our children and our schools are …
