Runners are being encouraged to bring as little as possible with them this year.
Following the backpack bombings at the Boston Marathon two weeks ago, runners in this year's Broad Street Run in Philadelphia won't be able to tote their gear in a backpack, race organizers announced in a mass email to participants Monday. Taking a page from the Transportation Safety Administration's playbook, race organizers are mandating runners use clear plastic drawstring bags, which will be handed out at the expo Friday and Saturday, to stow their gear this year. “You are strongly encouraged to bring as little as possible with you to the start of the race,” race organizers said in the email to runners. “All items brought into the start area are subject to search and/or confiscation.” Race organizers only indicated backpacks would be …

Oh stop with the over dramatization of things regarding bags. My god the event is not just like many of the other races around the country. It's much more compact then Boston and has more participants. What a bunch of whiners.   more ›
Philadelphia's runners are showing support for Boston with their socks.
As the nation reels from the happenings of the Boston Marathon, many will find unique ways to show support for the city that lost so much. From Facebook posts, to charitable donations, citizens are rallying to show support for Beantown. From the City of Brotherly Love, one popular way to show the love is apparently through one's socks. According to a recent Philly Mag blogger, many area sporting good stores are stocking up on red socks. Why? Because Philadelphians are preparing to show they care. Those participating in the Broad Street Run, slated for Sunday, May 5, are planning to wear red running socks to show the love for Boston. Get it? Red ... Sox ... The city may be home to the loyalest of Phillies sports fans, but for one race, the…

Many categories of tickets are sold out, but there are still some available if you want to see great golfers competing in your neighborhood.
When tickets for the 2013 U.S. Open, to be held at Merion Golf Club, went on sale in June, many categories quickly sold out. “Due to space constraints, only 25,000 spectator tickets will be sold, which is significantly fewer tickets than a typical U.S. Open,” the ticketing website reads. Tickets for Friday, Saturday and Sunday are completely sold out, according to the ticketing site, as are passes for the entire week. But, there are still tickets available for the June 10 to 16 event. Monday through Wednesday are practice rounds with the tournament running Thursday through Sunday. The smallest in the family has taken to the field.
She picked out a pink bat. She has a pink helmet, complete with sparkles that match the facemask. It all fits neatly into her pink Louisville Slugger bat bag. She’s ready for the big leagues. I’m talking, however, of my 5-year-old daughter. She is about to embark on her very first season of t-ball as part of the Audubon Recreation Association’s (ARA) spring league. She is playing in the “Girls’ Softball 6U” team, meaning those 6 and under. She is almost a foot smaller than every other girl out there. But, what she lacks in athletic skill, she makes up for in enthusiasm. It is still unclear if my darling children will be as athletically inclined as their mother. Don’t get me wrong. I didn’t play in college or go pro or anything, but I loved…

The Philadelphia Eagles announced Friday that they will no longer hold training camp at Lehigh University.
The Philadelphia Eagles are flying the Lehigh Valley coop. After 17 years, training camp will no longer be held at Lehigh University, the team announced on its website Friday. "There are so many people at Lehigh University who went above and beyond to accommodate us and to make Training Camp a special place for fans to travel each summer to get an up-close look at the team," Team President Don Smolenski said. "The city of Bethlehem has been part of our lives every summer for the past 17 years," Smolenski added. He said that the team will hold Training Camp in Philadelphia this summer both at the NovaCare Complex and at Lincoln Financial Field after staging the team’s annual preseason practices at Lehigh University for the last 17 years, a …

The ruling takes effect this fall for Philadelphia-area Catholic Youth Organization teams, the archdiocese announced Thursday.
Philadelphia Archbishop Charles J. Chaput has directed the archdiocese's Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) football league to begin allowing girls to play, the archdiocese announced Thursday. The league previously had a written policy to exclude girls from full-contact sports. Most people on a panel that recently studied the issue at Chaput's direction recommended preserving the policy, but Chaput decided otherwise, according to the archdiocese's announcement. An 11-year-old Bucks County girl played last fall before archdiocese officials told her she couldn't anymore. Caroline Pla, of Doylestown, and her parents launched a massive petition drive to lobby to change the policy, Doylestown Patch reported. The full statement from the …

The King of Pop's daughter might go from high school to pro in one step, while the Eagles Cheerleaders prepare for 2013 tryouts.
He is said to have kept them out of the limelight for their own protection. However, since the death of the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, his three children have been anything but. Paris Jackson, Michael's oldest daughter, is only approaching her 14th birthday. But the high school student has already been noticed by Philadelphia Eagles cheer director Barbara Zaun. Zaun, who has directed the Eagles' squad for the past eight seasons, told TMZ "We think Paris will make a great Eagle cheerleader." "She is already very comfortable in the limelight, so we think she would definitely stand out and impress the judges," Zaun said to TMZ. "We hope that she will try out for the team and be an Eagles cheerleader!" The Eagles cheerleading squad, which …
