Wissahickon's School Hockey Club defeated Upper Dublin, 5-1, in the annual Turkey Bowl, also known as the "Tennis Avenue Tussle,"' on Wednesday night at Bucks County Ice.
The game was expected to be a high scoring affair, as Upper Dublin was lead by seniors Sam Etskovitz, Tyler Peskin, and Gil Lederhandler, who have been among the league's leading scorers for each of the past two seasons, and were among the leaders entering the Thanksgiving game.
Wissahickon stole the show, however, getting big scoring games from two of their seniors, David Pataki (hat trick) and Jules Lever (two goals), two assists from junior Luke Honorowski, and stellar defensive play by juniors Dustin Rabinowitz and Matthew Vervlied, shutting down the Upper Dublin attack.
Ben Etskovitz, who also had a strong defensive game, scored the only Upper Dublin goal, early in the first period, before Wissahickon took control of the game.
Wissahickon goaltender Jordan Fromm turned away 7 of the 8 shots he faced, a testament to the strong defensive play by his teammates, while Upper Dublin's sophomore goaltender Zach Hanson kept UD in the game as long as he could, turning away 35 shots.
Joey Honorowski, Kyle Wolf, Brandon Rosoff and Jacob Segelbaum added much appreciated offensive help, regularly pinning Upper Dublin deep into their own zone, creating scoring chances, and sacrificing their bodies against older and bigger opponents.
Making their debuts in this rivalry, Tyler Thompson, Ryen Haney, and Alex Lightman also fought valiantly, taking advantage of their chances on the ice.
Upper Dublin next plays Lansdale Catholic at Hatfield Ice, and Wissahickon resumes on versus Plymouth-Whitemarsh at Bucks County Ice, both on Wednesday 11-28-12.
