UDHS Hosts Free Sudden Cardiac Arrest Screening Event
More than 300 student athletes received electrocardiograms to search for heart defects which could lead to heart palpitations or death.
The Philadelphia Inquirer reported Monday Upper Dublin High School hosted an event to screen athletes for underlying conditions that could cause sudden cardiac arrest.
The free mass public screening was sponsored by Simon's Fund, an area nonprofit that helps to raise awareness of sudden cardiac arrest, and organized by Paige Florin, an 8th grader at Sandy Run Middle School.
The main reason student athletes are at risk for experiencing sudden cardiac arrest is that exercise can unveil underlying heart defects, leading to symptoms like dizziness, fainting, chest pain, heart palpitations, even death.

At the screening event, more than 300 student athletes, ranging in age from 10 to 19, received electrocardiograms reviewed by pediatric cardiologist Victoria Vetter. If she saw anything abnormal, she immediately referred the student for additional testing.
