An Upper Dublin resident who wishes to replace his sidewalk or curb has two options: have the work done through an independent contractor, or ask the township to complete the work.
Anyone choosing the latter option will now pay the township's agreed upon rate with Horgan Brothers, Inc., of Harleysville, after the Board of Commissioners accepted a $97,599 bid for 2012, the lowest responsible bid of the seven that were presented to the township.
However, Upper Dublin officials were the first to say that residents often get a better deal through independent contractors.
"Residents have often been able to get cheaper prices, especially if they go in with their neighbors and provide a contractor a lot of work to bid on in the same street," said Jerry Smith, public works administrator for the township.
However, any resident should compare estimates or bids with the following township rates to ensure they are getting a good deal. This is particularly true when the township is doing work nearby, when the resident can "piggy back" for the cheapest possible rates.
