Commissioners Vote To Help Turf Cardinal Stadium

Commissioner Chet Derr brought forward an idea to partner with the Upper Dublin School District and commit $100,000 to turf Cardinal Stadium.

The District will already be working on the track, which needs to be completed by the end of 2013, in time for the track season.

Bob Danaher, a supporter of youth sports in the township, said to turf Cardinal Stadium would cost approximately $1 million, which includes engineering fees.

According to the Ambler Gazette, of the $1M, “Upper Dublin youth sports organizations have raised $375,000.”

While the school district has not committed to turfing the stadium, Danaher and Derr both said that the best time to do so is while the track is being redone.

The School Board has until their August meeting to vote on the turf for Cardinal Stadium, and will meet on July 23 at 7 p.m. in the Cardinal Room to discuss the project.

Derr was asking the Commissioners to place a $100,000 placeholder in the 2013 budget to show a commitment to the school district. However, if the district chooses to not go forward with the project, then the money goes back to the township.

Danaher said by using turf on the field, the use will increase by the district, and community use will be able to increase nearly 40 percent of the available hours.

The vote to put a $100,000 placeholder in the 2013 budget for the turf at Cardinal Stadium, was unanimous.
