One Dead, Two Charged Following East Norwalk Drive-By Shooting

Victims shot while riding on motorcycle. Suspects stopped by State Police in Fairfield.

Two people on a motorcycle were shot late Tuesday afternoon on Ft. Point Street in East Norwalk and one has died.

The two men police believe shot them from a passing mini-van were captured a short time later in Fairfield.

The deceased was 19 years old. The surviving victim, 18, is being treated at Norwalk Hospital. Police have not released their names.

Police said the shooting occurred at around 5:35 p.m. as the driver and passenger on a motorcycle were traveling on Fort Point Street in East Norwalk. Witnesses told police the gunman fired from a white minivan that then fled.

A short time afterwards, State Police stopped a van matching that description on Center Street in Fairfield that had exited Interstate 95 at Exit 19. Its two occupants were taken into custody, according to a news release from the commander of the Detective Bureau, Lt. Timothy Murphy.

Murphy said State Police charged the driver, Terrance J. Baxter, 22, of Norwalk, with interferring with an officer before turning over both men to Norwalk officers.

Murphy said the van's passenger was Kyle Freitag, 21, of Milford, is a former Norwalk resident.

He said both men were found to be in possession of cocaine.

Murphy said the men's arrests are based on evidence recovered at the scene and investigative leads. He  said both suspects face numerous charges, including murder and conspiracy to commit murder. He said formal charges will be made known Wednesday.

Officers taped off a crime scene on Ft. Point Street about a block long, running from Van Zant Street to Seaview Avenue.
