Cops: Fleeing Robber Jumps Off Bridge, Is Caught Anyway

The man faces a single felony count of robbery, police said.

A robbery suspect who was attempting to escape police jumped off a bridge in Pittsburgh shortly after midnight Sunday -- but police caught him in the end.

Evan Thornton, 27, jumped off the 10th Street bridge into the Monongahela River in Pittsburgh early Sunday morning, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported

Thornton is accused of stealing $300 from a man's pocket, prompting the chase, police told CBS Pittsburgh.

Search teams spotted Thornton in the water around 3:20 a.m., and he was taken into custody, multiple media outlets reported.

He is a charged with a single felony count of robbery, the Inquirer said. CBS said Thornton was in Allegheny County Jail.
