Brakes Possible Cause of Abington Trash Truck Accident

According to Upper Dublin Police reports, On Saturday, Nov. 23, an officer was dispatched to the Abington Trash Transfer Station, 995 Fitzwatertown Rd. in the Roslyn section of Upper Dublin Township for a report for a vehicle that ran over a stop sign and a fence.

Upon the officer's arrival, a blue Abington Trash Truck was allegedly parked in front of the property and occupied by driver, George Long, an employee and operator of Abington Township Sanitation Department, which is located on the trash transfer property.

According to the police report, the officer spoke with Long, who stated he was operating the truck and headed out from the parking area towards Fitzwatertown Road. According to the report, upon going down the hill towards the scale house, he turned the steering wheel for the curve in the road and applied the air brake pedal to slow, but the pedal allegedly went right to the floor. Long told police that while attempting to stop the truck, he hit the stop sign ad went through the fence area across from the scale house. The truck then stopped after the accident.

According to the police report, the officer spoke to Abington Township Mechanic Frank Fittipaldi, who said he will check the truck's brakes for proper operation.
