Upper Dublin Latin Students Excel at State Convention!

The Upper Dublin Latin program recently sent 34 Latin scholars to compete in the annual Pennsylvania Junior Classical League Latin convention and some congratulations are in order

From May 18 – May 21, the Upper Dublin Latin program sent 34 Latin scholars to state college to compete in the annual Pennsylvania Junior Classical League Latin convention- and some congratulations are in order! Despite its comparatively small size, Upper Dublin took home 80 top place awards in creative and graphic arts, athletic and academic competitions which secured them the 2nd trophy overall (closely behind the behemoth North Allegheny, a high school with over 3000 students).

On a special note, Alan Yang (10th) brought home three personal trophies for scoring the most points in academics, creative arts and in the whole convention overall. On convention, Alan Yang said, “I am so grateful for the opportunities the Upper Dublin Latin Program has provided for me! I was able to compete with other top Latin students in the state- and as it turns out, Magistra Moller and Koons prepared me pretty well.”

Also specially recognized were seniors Diana Wu and Ryan Zeitzer. Diana was honored for designing the state t-shirt for the past four years, in addition to her numerous awards in academics and graphic arts. Ryan was honored with the PAJCL classical scholarship, an annual renewable 1000$ sum for students planning on becoming Latin teachers.

This special weekend is overseen by the PAJCL student board and Upper Dublin was thrilled that Berenice Leung (11th), Alan Yang (10th) and Caroline Simon (10th) were elected to this governing body as President, Treasurer and Newsletter Editor respectively.

This was the final convention for Magistra Koons as a teacher and although she will be returning as a chaperone, the Pennsylvania Classical League honored her. As she addressed the 600 young classicists, she said “Latina Vivit!” (Latin lives!) Indeed.
