"A Grown-Up Kind of Pretty" by Joshilyn Jackson

In "A Grown-Up Kind of Pretty," Jackson weaves together a complex story that is told from three different points of view, that of a grandmother, mother and granddaughter.

I know it is a horrible thing to admit, especially in writing, but I tend to judge a book by its cover.  ( Don’t get too upset with me…I really am talking about books here. There is no underlying meaning..just ask the women in my bookclub..if you want me to like a book..put shoes on the cover..it works every time!!) Anyway, when I was searching for a new book to read, I came across “A Grown-Up Kind of Pretty” and the cover just spoke to me.

In ”A Grown-Up Kind of Pretty,”  Jackson weaves together a complex story that is told from three different points of view, that of a grandmother, mother and granddaughter. While generational stories have been told many different times in so many various ways, I can honestly say, I have never seen it done like this before.  This story was original and honest. It wasn’t smooth and pretty like the title would lead you to believe.  The characters were flawed and in some ways  beyond repair, however, never beyond redemption.
