Church Choir & Professional Orchestra to Present Christmas Cantata - 12/15 @ 10 a.m.

First Presbyterian Church in Springfield (FPCS) will bring
the rustic sounds of the backcountry to Christmas hymnody in its presentation
of “Appalachian Winter” on December 15 at 10 a.m. This highly anticipated
Christmas Cantata is free of charge, open to the public, and will feature
professional vocalists and musicians.

Directed by Carol Evans, Organist/Choir Director at
First Presbyterian Church in Springfield and Assistant Professor of Music and
Choral Director of The Voices of Gwynedd at Gwynedd Mercy University, the FPCS
presentation will include soloists Debra Wilson and Melanie Pello; flutist
Michele Kelly; violinist Melissa Locati; Celloist Talia Schiff; Mandolinist
Duane Large; guitarist Pete Smyser; Percussionist Bill Cain; Pianoist Ben
Hoffman; and the Senior Choir of First Presbyterian Church in Springfield.

The musical score was arranged by
Joseph Martin and includes popular Christmas carols like “Away in a Manger” and O
Little Town of Bethlehem”, as well as traditional spirituals such as “Children,
Go Where I Send Thee” and “Go, Tell It on the Mountain”.  The result is a fresh,
new sound that is culturally reminiscent of the nineteenth century Appalachian
frontier.
