Is Your Password On this List? Change It!

A software company has released a list of common passwords.

You might think your password is clever. Or you might think that it's so simple no one would ever guess it.

You're probably wrong.

SplashData, a company that creates password-management applications, has released its annual list of the 25 worst passwords. The list was compiled from common passwords posted by hackers, according to an article in TIME Magazine

The top three, "password", "123456" and "12345678", are the same top three from SplashData's 2011 list.

A few new passwords have appeared on the list this year, though.

SplashData, among others, recommends in the TIME article that you have different passwords for all your accounts.

You should "[think] about passwords as 'passphrases.' For instance, use a phrase like 'dog eats bone' and add underscores, dashes, hyphens and other punctuation marks to satisfy the special-character requirement: 'dog_eats_bone!'", says SplashData's CEO in the TIME article.
