Test Prep for SAT / ACT / PSAT.. how much is enough?

As an educator, when the subject of SATs (or ACTs or PSATs) comes up... one of the most common questions I am asked is:
How much prep does my child need?

It's a simple and straight forward question.. but in reality, it doesn't always have a simple answer...

Here are somethings to consider:
what is you college level goal?
what is you past test experience?
have you done any prep in the past?
how much time do you have to invest in a test prep program (weeks to the test date)?
how much $$ do you have to invest in a test prep program ?
how much time does your child have to work on test prep (hours each week to do study materials and practice)?
What is your best style of learning (class

Here is the key:
Ask the right questions and plan your program according to your short and long term goals.   In the end.. your goal for test prep is to help you get into the college of your choice, not to get a 'bragging rights' type score.  College admissions is a complex process and standard test scores are just one component.
