Hurricane Day Off? Here useful Educational Activities for you students

Ok.. I imagine (like mine own) your children weren't upset when the call from UD schools came about 4pm Sunday to close school Monday (and it seems possibly on Tuesday as well).  So now what?  2 full days of video games?   Some much needed "down time" from the rigors of homework? 

Here are some simple and 'painless' activities that students can do to make use of these 'off days'... 

1. Organize.  
   Get caught up with paperwork and stray tasks.  Put all your papers in their proper binders or sections of your 3 ring notebook  Clean out papers that are dated or that you may not need to take to school every day and put them in folders.  
   
   
2. Clean out your backpack.   
   You never know what you'll find at the bottom of a backpack.  (in my own case a permission slip for a field trip in May and half eaten granola bar).
   
   
3. Work ahead.  
   Most teachers post work on web or wiki pages, and most students know what was going to be happening this week.  If you something due on Friday... get started now! (good advice in ANY weather actually)
   
   
4. Read
   If / when the power cuts out we may not have a choice, but simply reading a book if a great idea.  
   
   
5. Review your work to date
   the marking periods are ending soon.  You have 7 weeks worth of school work that you can review.  Be sure that you understand what you have learned or what you were supposed to have learned.
   
   
6. Practice
   If you are doing standard test prep for an SAT / ACT style test.. this is a great time to do some extended practice testing. The real tests are 4+ hours long and typically it is difficult to find that sort of 'free time' to mock test.
   
   
7. Write
   Start / keep a journal or blog.  Like reading this is an excellent way to learn and express yourself.
