Volunteers Needed for New Fresh Produce Initiative

Doylestown, PA - Those looking to make a difference for Bucks County families in need are invited to volunteer at the Hope of the Harvest Charitable Garden at the Delaware Valley – Doylestown campus.

The garden was founded in 2012 as the result of a partnership between Delaware Valley College, Bucks County Opportunity Council and Philabundance. In its inaugural year, more than 15,000 pounds of fresh vegetables and fruit were produced and distributed to pantries in the county’s Food and Nutrition Network (FaNN), which benefited local families.

An additional acre has been added to the garden this year, doubling the potential output of lettuce, cantaloupes, sweet corn, cucumbers, squash, tomatoes and other produce for 2013.

FaNN, the county’s lead emergency food provider, has distributed over 1.2 million meals to Bucks County families in the past two years, and the Charitable Garden has provided a consistent and sustainable method to ensure future meal donations include locally grown produce.

“The Garden is essential to making sure families in need have access to food that is fresh and healthy,” said Eileen Albillar, Volunteer and Community Connections Manager with the Opportunity Council. “The Opportunity Council and its partners are doing everything they can to bring nutritious food to local families, and the volunteers that come out every week to help in the garden are absolutely essential to the mission.”
