“A Celebration of African American History and Achievement in the School District of Upper Dublin.” - For March 29 2014 @ 7:00 pm
On Saturday, March 29th, at 7:00 pm in the Performing Arts Center at Upper Dublin High School, the School District of Upper Dublin is proud to present an event entitled “A Celebration of African American History and Achievement in the School District of Upper Dublin.” The sponsor of the event is the Upper Dublin Education Foundation.
As part of this special event, the School District of Upper Dublin will feature
a look back at the last sixty years, and remember and celebrate some of the early trailblazers, including staff members like Bill Rose, June Gaskins, and so
many others, whose service in the District began back around the time of the Old Glenside Elementary School.
This look back will, no doubt, for some be a history lesson, for others a trip
down memory lane, and for all an opportunity to recognize former students,
teachers, and other community members who played a prominent role in the early days of the School District of Upper Dublin.
As part of the celebration and the look back, the evening will also include
special performances by Upper Dublin alums Josh Tower (The Lion King),
Keith Spencer (Broadway Tour of A Little Night Music), and Lindsay Roberts (Porgy and Bess) along with special presentations honoring individuals like Kim Gallagher, who earned bronze and silver medals in the ‘84 and ‘88 Olympics, Dorn Taylor, who went on to pitch for the Pittsburgh Pirates,
Jim Wallace, who rose from modest beginning to an outstanding career in
business and engineering and many others. The intent of the evening is to
remember, to learn from, to celebrate, and perhaps most of all, for our current
young people, to inspire.
If you have an interest in the history of the local area and have fond memories of Evelyn Wright, Kim Gallagher, Bill Rose and so many other trailblazers, if you love great music, or if you are the parent or grandparent of a young person whom you would like to inspire, please consider joining us on March 29th for this very special event. Tickets are free and available at the door, but seating is limited so please plan to come early.
If there are any questions about the event, please contact the Office of the Superintendent of Schools at 215-643-8802.
The Planning Committee for the event includes Luci Davis, Susan Lohoefer, Marilyn Bolling, Crystal Jackson, Claudia Blake, Donna Perone, Dan Ortiz, Hazel McGriff, Bill Rose, Peter Alston, Judith Bines-Vargas, Chris Clements, Jason Trantas and Michael Pladus.
