Germantown Chinese Programs (youth & adult programs)

Germantown Academy is proud to announce the second year of formal Chinese Programs designed to educate community members about the culture and language of China. All classes take place at Germantown Academy in Fort Washington, PA, and are taught by experienced teachers who have proficiency with all levels of Chinese language.

Youth Immersion Chinese Language Class

Open to students entering K through Sixth Grades at GA and neighboring schools. The course is designed to teach children whose first language is English and to immerse them in the Chinese language on consecutive days.
Monday-Thursday, 4-5:30pm
School Year: September 18, 2013 – June 11, 2014 - total 120 classes
Enrollment: $1,000 for the school year, or pay in two installments $525 each
This course will provide opportunities to learn about Chinese language, culture, and history for the GA community and surrounding region. Chinese Beginner, I & II classes could be formed, as the classes will be grouped according to the student’s Chinese proficiency.

Youth Beginner Chinese Course

Open to students entering K through Sixth Grades at GA and neighboring schools. The course is designed to teach children whose first language is English with little or no previous exposure to Chinese language.
Sundays, 1-2:30pm (K and 1st Grades)
Sundays, 1-3pm (2nd-6th Grades)

School Year: September 18, 2013 – June 11, 2014 - total 30 classes
Enrollment: $400 for the school year, or pay in two installments $215 each
This course will provide opportunities to learn about Chinese language, culture, and history for the GA community and surrounding region.  Chinese Beginner, I & II classes could be formed, as the classes will be grouped according to the student’s Chinese proficiency.

 

Adult Course (Understanding China) – Level 1

Open to GA community and greater Philadelphia community
Thursdays, 6:30-8:30pm
School Year: September 19, 2013 – June 12, 2014 - total 30 classes
Enrollment: $400 for the school year, or pay in two installments $215 each
The introduction of China and the daily use of Chinese as well as Pinyin will be the primary focus of this class. An introduction of how to communicate in Chinese will also be covered.


Adult Course (Chinese Language) – Level 2

Open to GA community and greater Philadelphia community members who have completed Level I Understanding China course at GA or have mastered introductory Chinese elsewhere.
Wednesdays, 6:30-8:30pm
School Year: September 18, 2013 – June 11, 2014 - total 30 classes
Enrollment: $400 for the school year, or pay in two installments $215 each
This class provides a more in-depth look of China and the daily use of Chinese as well as Pinyin will be the primary focus. A more advanced level of how to communicate in Chinese will also be covered.
 

SAT II Chinese and/or Advanced Placement (AP) Chinese Prep

Open to GA grades 7-12 and local high school students
Saturdays, 1:30-3:30pm
School Year: September 21, 2013 – June 7, 2014 - total 30 classes.
Enrollment: $400 for the school year, or pay in two installments $215 each; Books for the course are extra and money will be collected when school year begins
Students must be at YCT Level 3 or equivalent to take this class. This course is designed to help improve students’ Chinese language proficiency with the goal of passing the SAT Chinese test and assist with successful completion of the AP Chinese test.


English as a Second Language (ESL)

Open to GA community and greater Philadelphia community. The course is designed to teach adults whose first language is not English.
Saturdays, 1:30-3:30pm
School Year: September 21, 2013 – June 7, 2014 - total 30 classes
Enrollment: $400 for the school year, or pay in two installments $215 each
The introduction of basic language skills of reading and writing will be examined.

 DISCLAIMER: Germantown Academy will adhere to the following: There is a minimum of 7 students needed to run each class. Class can be cancelled for lack of enrollment. If class is cancelled due to lack of enrollment, all monies will be returned to those who have already registered. Youth classes will be split between PreK-second grade and third-fifth grade, depending on interest.
