Brian Westbrook and Dr. Janet Samuels to Co-Host "Looking Out For Kids" Vision Care Event

Proceeds help provide vision care for under-insured and uninsured children in and around Philadelphia

Brian Westbrook, Comcast SportsNet Eagles’ analyst and former NFL all-pro and Philadelphia Eagles running back, and Dr. Janet Samuels, Superintendent of Norristown Area Schools, will co-host The Eye Institute of Salus University's seventh annual"Looking Out For Kids" fundraiser and silent auction. The event will be held at the Hafter Student Center on the Elkins Park Campus of Salus University - 50 Breyer Drive - on Friday, November 15, 2013 at 7:30 p.m. 

All proceeds help provide vision care for under-insured and uninsured children in Philadelphia and its surrounding communities. Working with School District of Philadelphia nurses during the 2012-13 academic year, The Eye Institute provided the following services to children in Philadelphia’s public schools:

• Vision screenings to 2,379 children (722 children failed this screening).
• Comprehensive vision and ocular health examinations to over 500 children by transporting them to one of The Eye Institute’s three locations.
• Distributing more than 800 pairs of eyeglasses to Philadelphia’s public school children.

The Eye Institute also expanded its services to children by collaborating with the Norristown Area School District to establish a school-based eye clinic. Once a week, for seven weeks, an Eye Institute vision care team provided vision services to uninsured children in Joseph K. Gotwals Elementary School. Fifty-two of the 59 children examined required eyeglasses. Each child received two pairs of glasses - one to take home and one to leave at the school. The financial success of the 2012 “Looking Out for Kids” fundraiser helped to make this happen.

The “Looking Out for Kids” charity fund also provides vision care services and eyeglasses to uninsured children referred to The Eye Institute from the Philadelphia City Health Centers, Delaware Valley Community Health, Inc., and the Greater Philadelphia Asian Social Service Agency (GPASS).

Early diagnosis and treatment of vision problems in children are key. One in four children suffers from visual difficulties, which can impact their school performance. Since its inception, the “Looking Out for Kids” fundraiser has brightened thousands of children’s lives to ensure continued success in the classroom.
