Home for the Holidays by Lani B Moss, President, Or Hadash
Autumn is upon us. Time to go back to school. Time to put away the beach chairs; clean the sand out of our shoes. In the Jewish community, it is time to think about the high holydays – Rosh Hashanah and then Yom Kippur. At Or Hadash, we are looking forward to celebrating these holydays in our beautiful building. This might not sound so extraordinary – but this year is only the second time since we moved into our Ft. Washington “mansion” in 1995 that we will do this. Last year was the first. The process that the community went through in order to make this move was emblematic of who we are as a congregation. Of course, we formed a committee (we do that a lot – but it really works for us). The committee represented all various constituencies within the community. After discussion, research and consultation with our Rabbi we decided to move ahead. Many hours of hard work by dedicated lay leaders and our professionals came next. The result was services over the ten days that were warm, spirited, and very well attended.
If you are looking for a warm, engaging, inclusive community in which to celebrate the Jewish holidays this year (and for many years to come), I invite you to join us at Or Hadash: A Reconstructionist Congregation. We’ll be at home. You can find us on the web at www.orhadash.com or at 215-283-0276.
