Could you get flooded... by bills that aren't covered?

Did you know that Pennsylvania is one of the most flood prone states?  You don’t need to live on the ocean or on a lake to be at risk for a flood. In fact  Hurricane Sandy took many business owners as well as homeowners by surprise as referenced here by this New York Times article.

Only about 5% of business carry flood insurance, yet just a few inches of water can cause thousands of dollars of damage.  The NFIP estimates that nearly 40% of businesses do not reopen following a disaster and the average claim was over $75,000.

Flood insurance is not provided by a standard business policy, but a commercial flood policy.  It’s important to discuss this coverage with your agent if you are in a flood zone or concerned about the possibility of a flooding.

And don't forget your home. Flooding is not covered by a regular home insurance policy. Again, you may think you are not prone to it, but with the tendency for this are to have flash flooding, it could happen to anyone in the Southeastern Pennsylvania region.  Make sure you check with your insurance agent about how to be covered in case it happens to you.
