UDPD Reports: Cumberland Farms Scammed for Nearly $3,000

Weekly Upper Dublin Police Reports

All information is according to official police reports filed at the Upper Dublin Police Department. All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Cumberland Farms scammed for $2,829.70: On November 26 at approximately 6:22 p.m., an Upper Dublin Police officer was dispatched to the Cumberland Farms gas station in Dresher for the report of a phone scam.

Upon arrival, an employee told the officer the following story:

About half an hour earlier, the employee received a call from a female individual who identified herself as Terri Smith from the Cumberland Farms Help Desk. The woman told the employee that there was a problem with the “Green Dot Money Pak” cards the store sells and that a representative from Green Dot would be in touch shortly.

Approximately five minutes later, he received a call from a second female individual, who did not give a name but identified herself as a Green Dot employee. The woman told the Cumberland Farms employee that she wanted to check the activation of several of the “money pak” cards and requested that he ring up six of the cards, four worth $500 and two worth $400, and each with a $4.95 service fee to total $2829.70. The woman also requested the six serial numbers.

The individual then requested that he ring up six more cards in the same way, and told the employee that those cards would be voided by the system, which they were. After placing the employee on hold, the woman hung up.

Roughly 20 minutes later, the employee received a third call, this time from the Cumberland Farms Help Desk, which informed him that he had been scammed and to call police.

The employee said that second woman was “very familiar with the purchasing and selling of the Green Dot cards,” and was convincing by knowing how to “walk him through the process.”

Car break-in: As , Upper Dublin police are seeking a woman in connection with a stolen purse. According to police reports, at approximately 1:26 p.m. on November 25, an Upper Dublin resident was driving home from Mondauk Park when she noticed her purse was missing from her vehicle.

The victim recalled that her car door had been ajar, but “didn’t think anything of it.” According to the report, the purse contained a driver’s license, several debit cards, a cell phone and cash. At approximately 2:08 p.m., an individual made three attempts to withdraw money using one of the cards at an ATM, and was captured on video surveillance.

Truck shot with BB gun: At approximately 8:00 a.m. on November 21, a resident of the 1800 block of North Hills Avenue, Willow Grove, entered his 1997 red Ford Pickup. Upon closing the door, the rear window of the cab shattered. While inspecting the glass, the resident found an impression on the window where it appeared it had been shot with a BB gun. The victim believes the “shooting” occurred sometime after 6:30 p.m. the night before.

Cell phone stolen at high school: An Upper Dublin student reported that someone stole his $100 Samsung phone out of a gym bag placed in a team locker room at the high school, on November 21 between the hours of 5:30 and 8:00 p.m.

FedEx package stolen from porch: A resident of the 100 block of Rue Charmille Road, Ambler, reported that someone stole a FedEx package containing a Dell 6-cell ion battery from his front porch between 11:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. on November 21.
