A Pennsylvania Turnpike maintenance worker was killed Monday morning when a tractor-trailer overturned in the eastbound lanes of the Pennsylvania Turnpike, Mimi Doyle, Public Information Manager for the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission, told Patch. Doyle said that the worker was doing "routine maintenance on the side of the road," but was unable to say whether the worker was on foot or inside a vehicle at the time of the accident.

At the scene, road workers could be seen saluting as what was apparently the worker's body was loaded into a maroon SUV with flashing emergency lights.

The accident closed the roadway between the Valley Forge and Norristown interchanges at about 8:30 a.m. Monday. The eastbound lanes of the roadway remained closed as of 10:45 a.m.

A spokesperson with the Montgomery County Department of Public Safety said that two other people had been injured in the crash. No information was available on their conditions.

One victim in unknown condition was seen being loaded aboard a medical helicopter at about 9:55 a.m, and a second was loaded aboard another helicopter at about 10:00 a.m. A third medical helicopter departed the scene at about 10:05 a.m., but it was unclear whether it had a patient aboard.

The damaged tractor-trailer had rolled onto its left side, blocking the entire roadway, with apparent heavy damage to the cab and front of the trailer. What appeared to be an orange roadwork vehicle was sitting upright a few feet away, with signs of moderate damage.

A live incident status page operated by the Montgomery County department of public safety indicated that emergency responders were dispatched at 8:28 a.m.

The accident took place about 1/10th of a mile west of the Ridge Pike overpass in Plymouth Township.

CBS Philadelphia reported via Twitter that the roadway had been closed in both directions, but a reporter at the scene said some westbound traffic was moving through the accident area as rescue operations continued.

Public safety radio reports indicated at least some emergency responders were having difficulty getting to the scene because of traffic delays in the immediate area.

We'll update this article as more information becomes available.

[Editor's note: An earlier version of this article mistakenly reported that the roadway had been reopened. The westbound lanes of the road were open to traffic as of 10:45 a.m. The eastbound lanes remained closed.]

Thank you for covering this tragic accident. I guess there will be an investigation. There is just too much traffic congestion in that area and always some kind of roadwork going on. My sympathy to the deceased's family and my prayers for the injured.

I wonder if speed was a factor. Hard to imagine anyone speeding on the PA Turnpike. It's against the law, right? My heart goes out to the Felice Family... :(
