Staying Committed to Exercise

With fall approaching and so many things on the calendar, how can anyone keep up with a consistent exercise routine?

With fall approaching and so many events on the calendar for the next few months, staying in shape can be easier said than done. Being totally committed to an exercise routine can be made very difficult when so many other factors demand your attention everyday; things like work, school, family needs and financial matters can make it nearly impossible to get some "me" time for exercise.

Even with all of these distractions, you can still be successful in achieving your fitness goals with some extra planning.

Here are some things to consider when planning a routine to help make it a reality:

  • Know what your goals are and write them down. Having these things written down will solidify them and help you stay comitted.
  • Write down your schedule on a calendar or planner. Keep track of appointments, work, school and other obligations, and then schedule exercise around those things weeks in advance. There will always be some unexpected things that "pop up," but mapping out your schedule in advance will help keep you in control.
  • Identify anything that is holding you back. Limits on time, boredom, bad weather, fatigue, prior injuries or health concerns can all interfere with being committed to exercise. Identify barriers that prevent you from exercising, and then work on removing or mitigating them.
  • Find enjoyable activities. You are much more likely to stick with a routine that you enjoy!
  • Find a buddy. Whether it is a friend or family member or even a group of people at an exercise class, working out with other people will make it easier to stay committed and enjoy the workout at the same time.
  • Keep the benefits of exercise in mind. Remember why you are doing this, and make it a special time to unwind and focus on taking care of your body and mind.
