Press Release: Transition Ambler/UD Plans Monthly Film Screenings and Potlucks

The environmental organization hopes to reach out to the community.

Transition Ambler/Upper Dublin, the project exploring the township’s transition to life after oil, will kick off its monthly events with two free film screenings of In Transition 1.0, each with an accompanying organic food potluck.

The film documents the emergence of the Transition Town movement, a global grassroots initiative responding to the challenges of peak oil, climate change and economic instability at a local, community level. The film and potluck will be held at the Upper Dublin Township Building at 801 Loch Alsh Ave., Fort Washington, Monday, July 18, and Thursday, July 28, at 6:30 p.m.

Transition AUD’s founder Jared Blumer describes the film as “an inspirational snapshot of ordinary people doing extraordinary things to secure the future of their communities.”

Attendees are encouraged to bring local, organic food dishes to share at the potluck that precedes the film. The potluck will provide an opportunity for attendees to meet other community members and learn more about local sustainability initiatives.

Transition AUD member Erin Stolz said, “Transition Towns provide a model for preparing for the worst while enjoying the benefits of building community.”

The worst she is referring to are the challenges posed by climate change, peak oil and economic instability.

Transition AUD hopes to engage the community by holding workshops for members to share needed skills like gardening, composting, and seamstressing; encouraging the support of the local economy; and launching new projects, such as a time bank or local currency.

“We are excited to join the many citizens of Pennsylvania and all over the country who have started Transition Towns in their area: Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Media, Cheltenham, Lancaster and Sewickley,” Blumer said. “It is a movement that not only encourages every citizen to contribute their unique abilities, it unites those already involved in sustainability under one vision of local resilience and community.”

A discussion will follow the film exploring what the citizens of Ambler and Upper Dublin can do to transition to a sustainable and resilient community.
