Restaurant Review: Jade Garden
Chinese tonight? Maybe Japanese? Why choose. Go to Jade Garden and get the best of both worlds...or, ahem, countries.
Sometimes finding good ethnic food in the suburbs can feel like a daunting task. Thankfully, tasty respites like Jade Garden exist. With an extensive Chinese menu and an equally impressive Japanese selection, Jade Garden has plenty of options to keep everyone in the family satisfied. And with owners who have been in the local food scene for the past 15 years (they used to own a location in Chestnut Hill) it becomes quickly obvious that they know good food.
Walking in the door, you are immediately taken by the delicious smells – nothing like being excited for your meal before you even get to your table. Once there, you are greeted by a friendly waiter, a complimentary pot of hot tea and crispy noodles served with both a sweet duck and a spicy mustard sauce. And that's before you even order.
Dinner started with one of the Garden's special sushi offerings: the Tiger Roll ($11.95) - tuna and salmon encased in rice and covered with more tuna and salmon, some eel, flying fish roe and tempura flakes. Tasty as this tantalizing combination was, the temperature was a bit warmer than a good sushi roll should be. To give the waters a second test an order of tuna sashimi ($4.50) was ordered. Thankfully these pink medallions of fish came out perfectly cold and so fresh they nearly melted on the tongue.
If you are going to make your way past the sushi bar and its 30+ sushi roll options, you'll be pleased to find the menu offers traditional Japanese dishes such as Beef Teriyaki and Vegetable Tempura which are served with Miso Soup or a House Salad.
If it feels overwhelming to order from the extensive Chinese menu (no MSG included) with choices like Honey Walnut Chicken, Wild-Peppered Lamb and Grilled Norweigan Salmon in a Black Bean Sauce, take advantage of one of the chef's daily specials like the Orange Shrimp ($12.95). The lightly battered shrimp were gently fried and tossed with a thick, zesty orange sauce and delicately steamed vegetables. A heaping portion of brightly colored carrots, snap peas, mushrooms, broccoli, water chestnuts, scallions and slices of fried orange peel peeked out from under the pieces of jumbo shrimp. To soak up as much of the orange sauce as possible, skip the white rice which bordered on the dry side and go for the brown – perfectly sticky and moist.
Do yourself a favor and pick up a bottle of wine on the way. Jade Garden is a BYOB – a money-saving option that allows you to splurge on another delicious menu offering. Or, go on the website and order yourself some take-out (with free delivery). And with extras like a heated dinner plate, a friendly and attentive staff and a sparkling clean dining experience, Jade Garden is hard to stay away from.
