Details Emerge in Car Fire Accident

The woman's car burst into flames after running a stop sign and striking another vehicle, police say.

On Friday, October 7, Upper Dublin Patch reported that a car was seen on fire at the intersection of Fort Washington and Spring Avenues, but that no injuries had occurred.

An Upper Dublin Police report from this past week now shows the details of the incident.

According to the report, a 72-year-old Blue Bell woman was traveling west on Spring Avenue in a 2006 PT Cruiser when she entered the intersection with Fort Washington Avenue without stopping. At the same time, a 2010 Volvo XC 60, driven by a 59-year-old Dresher woman and a passenger, was traveling south on Fort Washington Avenue when it legally entered the intersection and was struck by the PT Cruiser.

By the time police had arrived, the Cruiser was “engulfed in flames,” but all occupants were out of and away from the vehicle. According to the report, the driver of the Cruiser told the officer that she had “hit her brakes to stop at the stop sign, but it was like [she was] on ice.”

“I couldn’t stop. I turned left at the intersection and we hit,” she continued.

An independent witness told police that she saw the PT Cruiser go through the intersection without stopping. According to the report, police issued a traffic citation to the driver of the PT Cruiser.

The Fort Washington Fire Company responded to the incident and extinguished the flames. A cause of the fire has not been released.

Other traffic incidents:

  • On October 8, an 25-year-old Thorndale, Pa. Man was issued a citation for making an illegal left turn onto Jarrettown Road from North Limekiln Pike and striking an oncoming vehicle. The cited driver, and his two passengers, both in their early twenties, were all transported to Abington Memorial Hospital for injuries.
  • On October 14, an 89-year-old Cheltenham woman was transported to Abington Memorial Hospital after her vehicle struck a utility pole on Norristown Road near Tally-ho Drive. The woman told police that her vehicle had “jumped the curb” after turning onto the roadway and struck the pole.
